The annual squid run, which I NEVER miss, kicked off in Hyannis MA this weekend. Saturday's trip was 1/2 Tog and 1/2 Squid, and neither species was all that cooperative. Despite a very strange moon tide and slow pickings, we managed a limit of very large Tog all 6-9 pounds. The afternoon squid bite was very spotty, although we worked, the squid were just not there in very large numbers.
Sunday was much the same, if not worse in the morning. We searched all over the place, and were only able to find a few small pods of squid. The drifts were quick, and only a handful of squid would come up on each pass. By noon, we were almost ready to give up, when vigilence paid off and we were able to find a bottom that hadnt been touched with a good concentration of squid, and nobody around. We anchored up and had excellent, non stop bites from 12:30 on, and I stayed out late till 4:30 for the guys so they could cash in on the late bite.
Hopefully this is a sign of a better squid run this year than past few seasons.
