Sit down Shut up And fish
South of Marthas Vineyard Report
Hey Guys,
I fished south of the Vineyard on sat. on a buddy's 26 Cape Cod Marine center console. Had a decent day catching 3 school Bluefin, 1 Mahi, and missed a white marlin. The Bluefin bites came on a Green Monsta Spreader Bar, Cedar Plug (Natural), and a skirted Ballyhoo. After catching the tuna and mahi and given the reports of lots of White Marlin around decided to send the dredges out surrounded by naked ballyhoo. One Whitey came crashing into the dredge pitch baited a circle hook rigged bally and missed him, but was pretty cool to see the dredges working 20 miles behind the Vineyard.
Anyway lots of good fishing not too far behind the island and in the coming weeks should only get better. I also believe this is going to be a very good white marlin bite south of the island 10-15 miles about every 8-10 years the whites come in thick behind the Vineyard and this year is shaping up to be one of those years!
Anyone else out there on Saturday? Saw about 10-15 boats working in the same area (Fingers)

5 bluefin including a personal best 22" monster. I zigged on my marlin fishing and went north (bad move) as opposed to south.
Oh well; it was a gorgeous day regardless.

I was out there as well. Started at the fingers but it started getting crowded. Worked our way East towards the break and picked up a 40" Bluefin in 64 degree water on a BCT Munson Mahi with Ballyhoo. That was all we got for the day. Worked the break back to Gordons Gully....nothing. Did see a Mola go airborne couple of times which was cool. Run back to the sound was great then the run from Muskeget Channel to Bass River sucked!!!!

I just got squirted with ballyhoo poop
Saturday
I was out there myself sharking after a leisurely, gentlemanly departure from the dock in Mashpee at 9:30. Immediately after stopping the boat, something incredibly massive passed slowly under us. It was a whitish, greenish cloud in the pretty clear water, and it was the width of a car. My son felt that it may have been a phospherescence cloud surrounding a whale? Anyway, first line with a live bluefish hits the water at 11:30 on a gorgeous day, while we are baiting the second line the first one goes off. An hour and a half later a 78 inch mako hits the deck that scales out at 206 at the dock. Why can't all our trips be that easy??

Probably a basking shark - I saw several on sat including 1 breaching.

We fished Saturday starting at the Claw. Just before putting in we saw a big (300# or better) Mako go airborne 7 or 8 times in a row. Straight up/straight down tail first. Awsome sight to see. We picked up a 31" bluefin on a green machine chain behind a Green Carlson bird, the only fish of the day. Funny how a number of small fish caught that day went after lures half their size. With all the talk about the action at the Gully, we trolled that way only to find colder & colder water with no discernable breaks. Plenty of life around, Whales, Dolphin following the boat for miles, a few sharks, and a pretty good Thresher. The belly of the fish had mostly small bait like silversides, also a piece of Squid, and one fish with a much rounder profile like a butterfish. No signs of Halfbeaks as others reported. Beautiful day all in all, and a short comfortable ride home. Can't wait for the next weather window.
