Fished the Dump area south of Marthas Vineyard on 8/25 on the one year old 38 Out Island Express “Catja”. Fishing was slow and we ended up with 4 yellowfins in the 20 to30# range for 6-hours of trolling with a few skippies thrown in to keep things entertaining. Most action was towards the NW corner and further North outside of the dump. Water temperature was between 72 to 75 with the center of the dump being the warmest. No real temp breaks and the weeds were not all that bad. Fishing seemed to be slow for most according to radio chatter. Not a lot of life in the area. Most boats picked a fish here and there. I think the storm scattered things a bit and separated the water. It sounds as if the better concentration of fish is closer to the 30 fathom line. Heard rumors of a boat fishing Cox’s ledge releasing a white and blue marlin.
Our main objective was to get some hours on Catja. We are still getting her fish ready and after some major engine warranty work, we needed to get a day-trip in so we are canyon ready. There was still some residual swell from Hurricane Bill on the run out that kept us to 25 knots, but the weather improved and we mad a comfortable 30 knot ride in with a soft and dry ride. We are still assessing her fish raising ability, but some fish blood on the decks of Catja was a good sign of things to come. She rides great and has plenty of power with the twin CAT C12s at 575HP each.
