Somebody call the CDC....
Because this tuna sickness is spreading fast!
The past week has been absolutely off the charts good, with multiple fish days every day out this week. The fish we have been on the last week have finally started to put on the feed bag, and today's trip was one for the books! The fish have been mostly of the 68-72 inch variety, but we did manage to take 2 slot fish this week, a 57 and a 58, so a good sign that there are some other year classes represented and feeding finally.
Absolute nutty feeds today. Found some life in some shallow water, and the second pod of tuna up a fish crashed on some bait right near the boat, sporting some jewlery.....I kid you not, this fish had a lime green Ron-Z stuck to the side of his face, and couldnt have cared less as he swallowed a mouthful of bait....I had a crew of two today, Chad and Dave, and they were ready with a ton of Ron-Z heads they switched out with longer Owner Jobu hooks, and re-glued to the heads with the hooks further back. They have been doing their homework, and had all the right stuff including their own wind-on leaders. Chad switched out to a lime green snake, and on the first cast into the next feed he was tight to tuna #1. 35 minutes and two rod passes later, we released a nice 71-72 inch tuna to swim another day.
The life was a bit sporadic, but Capt. Josh from Outermost Angling had pushed into a different area and was talking about some insane chit going on all around him. Capt. Jeff from Fin Addiction was also working the area, and Josh called us both in on an absolute Nat-Geo type scene. These fish were up, staying up, and in good sized schools. The very first pod we came up on, 3 lures went in a Ron-Z, and Ocean Lure, and a Yo-Zuri Crystal mag minnow, and all 3 were tagged. One spit right away, but Chad's #2 fish on the zuri and mine stayed buttoned. Chads fish settled deep, while mine put on the best surface show Ive seen in a while, thrashing, head shaking, and then tearing across the surface at mach 1. Mercifully, this fish managed to throw the big single hook on the Ocean Lure, leaving Chad to fight his fish with no competition. All this time, there is an all out frenzy going on, I look over and see Capt. Jeff's crew into a fish of their own, heading for Portugal, our fish heading under his boat, and nothing but crashing tuna 360 degrees.
Chad worked this fish up in the bow for some time, until it settled in for the vertical fun. After another 20 minutes or so and another go around with the crew and the captain, fish number 2 released, and we are already 2 for 4 at 9am.
The life continued to impress and all 3 boats stayed on their own pods. We rolled up on another pod after a 10 minute rest, and immediately came tight on a Diawa Dorado Slider in a spot where the fish had been down for a half a minute with none showing....highlighting the importance of casting to an area even though the frenzy is over for a bit. This fish dumped the Stella 18K, and stopped somwhere around a 100 or so yards before we ran out of line. Chad and I then worked this fish to the boat in short order, giving us a 3 for 5 day, and a totally whipped crew at 10:30. Limped back to the dock at 12 noon, an unbelieveable morning and some really intense action. I can't believe how fortunate I am to be allowed to watch nature on such a raw, primal level. Absolutely insane chit, my fellow addicts.
