Used them for both tuna and shark, they are great reel for the money. Never had any issues with them at all.

I have one. It's the newer version TLD50 LRSA. It's got the oversized offset grip and gets about 42lbs of drag. I don't think you'll want to push the drag factor on a graphite reel but it will easily do 25-30lbs with some in reserve. It handled fish up to 180lbs this year no problem. Long term I don't know how the graphite frames will hold up but for about 300 bucks brand new I think it's a great reel. I was able to get about 475yds of 80lb mono on it.

I have a couple of the new ones TLD50 LSRA. They did fine with this years class fish. One nice thing about them is they are lighter so it feels like a 30 in your hand as opposed to my penn 50 2 speed.

I think the frame has been improved over the previous models but I'm not positive. I have no doubts Shimano would replace a broken one if it did happen. Their customer service is great. A guy I know had an older frame break ,and they sent him a new model for no cost.

I have used them quite a bit on the "Labrador" out of Scituate...caught many tuna with them and no problems really. The drag does seem to slip a little easier than the gold stuff but they are nice. Work just as well and are cheaper which is sweet.

    TLD 50 Shimanos

If you do not have the latest model with the new handle and new composite, I for sure do not recommend buying.

Unless, you are using it for a planner reel for wahoo, kingfish, barracuda, bait, etc.......

If you are planning on catching big tuna, marlin, etc..... and you plan on putting a lot of pressure with some heavy drag,........ the reel housing will break.

They will break always at the reel seat especially if you use any kind of harness.

I have destroyed many personally......... You will be best rigged with the latest Shimano Tiagra 50s two speeds.

    Good luck

    TLD 50 LRSA

I caught a 190 lb tuna in November this year on a TLD 50 LRSA. The performance of the reel was flawless. They are definitely a great reel for the money.

The new Shimano TLD50's have a reinforced reel seat to solve an earlier design issue. The new reels, imho, are the best in it's class period. Hands down. I have had friends of mine fight and land 500lb tuna on these reels, not that I would want to, but they got it done. The line capacity is less then the Tiagra 50W but it's $250 less in cost. You can get 400yds of 80lb Momoi diamond mono on there or you can back it with some hollow-core and get 500-600 yds of line easy. The reel will give you all the drag you will need out of a stand up harness. Nice reel. Capt. Eric

The price difference is $250 between the Shimano TLD50 and Tiagra 50...................

That is a very small amount to pay for fishing insurance.

$250 vs Possible fish of a lifetime.
