Don't get me wrong, I fish gold reels all the time, but for the average Rec. angler who fishes 8-12 times a season and has a tight budgett these reels will and do work well. Capt. Eric

TLD 50's Great Reels. I had four of them and fished them hard for a few years, then eventually upgraded to Tiagras. No complaints whatsoever with the TLD's
I hear you on the $250 price difference, but when buying 4-6 reels your looking at an additional $1000-1500 on the reels alone. When I got rid of the TLD's I put them on Ebay and got a good price back for them, making the upgrade to the Tiagra's a little less painful a few years down the road.
A nice thing about the TLD's is they were lighter than the Tiagras and could be tossed around a little easier.
Ive used a couple of TLD 50s for some time now with good results.Around 600 yds of 130 braid with 100 yds of 100 or 125 mono,20-25 lbs at strike, youll most likely never see the bottom half of the spool.....if your into it,they come apart and go back together easy for winter service too.
I have nothing at all against the TLD's. I own a few and the experienced guys have already said enough for me if I was considering them.
But I may offer a bit of contrarian advice here. I would buy some good used "gold" reels (Tiagras, Penn Int, etc) on Ebay or here in the used tackle for sale section...
Then I would send them over to a good tackle shop (like the one on this thread) to have them give the reel a good clean and lube.
You will end up spending about the same as the brand new TLD 50 and have the guts of an alibeit slightly "boat rashed" top premium reel. I think it is a better long term investment.

I bought 4 TLD-50's back in 05 when I got my 22fter they were like 340 apiece back then I think it was a solid purchase to this day. I do alotta shark fishing at night and when I snag some lobster gear I can put in low and reel the boat to the float.......... I beat and use the chit outta them havent had a failure yet and landed sharks over 300

I fish 7 tld50wlrs with 80lb stren or power pro braid(800-900)yds backing with 80lb momoi 100yd backing. These reels have landed huge mako's, tuna and anything that swims in the canyons. They are light, and coupled with penn 6' international standup rods (159-200$)of which I have 7 also the combo can not be beat. Super lightweight-only this summer did I get spooled in Veeches by what was one huge sword that went straight to the bottom in 4000 feet straight down. Only once in 20yrs(this summer) have I been spooled. These reels are only 2lbs shy of a tiagra 80 in terms of drag-check it out! Highly recommend with the penn vrs 50-100 or 30-80 rods. -Sword
you cant compare a reel to loosing a fish of a lifetime, if you do it right you can land the fish or release it in a appropriate time to make sure it has a good survival. me? i own 2 senators and 3 old penn int 80s. fish about 1-3 times a week and had about 30 bluefin on them this summer, only issue i had this season was a drag locked up and almost pulled a friend over the side, i put that reel down and had it serviced right away.
