    Shark week.

After getting skunked in my last 4 tuna trips I decided to give tuna fishing a break and try shark fishing. the past two weekends. I have always been better at catching tuna than sharks but I figured I'd give it a shot. In the past two weekends we have caught and released a total of 20 blue sharks ranging in size from 7' long up to and over 10'. Both trips we left sharks still swimming around the boat at the end of the day because we were tired of reeling them in. We have caught them on everything from cod gear to 80 class stand up gear and even spinning gear. It has been alot more fun than tuna fishing for me and we have been going home with coolers full of Cod and haddock aswell. I even got my dads friends 10 year old to reel in a 10'+ long shark all by himself. It was awsome!

great pics. what is that you're using above to the swivel to prevent the angler from reeling the swivel into the guide? i need something like that...some of the guys i take fishing just don't get it. thanks

Just a glow in the dark green bead. You can get them at most offshore fishing tackle shops or probably even a craft store.

ahh..very cool. thx. i have plenty of those. looks like you had it set about ~12" from the swivel..wasn't sure if you had it "anchored" on your leader or it ran freely. thanks again.

Those are Fisherman's outfitter Wind on shark leaders. There over all length is about 10 feet long. they are made by splicing 49 straind wire inside of 130 pound test dacron. On one end they splice a loop for the connection to your mainline and on the other is a crimped on swivel which I attach a short 3-5' length of single strand and a hook. The bead floats freely just above the swivel. I like them alot but I am going to start expirementing with heavy mono wind ons in the 400-600 pound test range. I like the ability of being able to cut mono easier than the multi strand in case of an emergency.

Maybe we shouldn try sharkin' for a while. Charlie hasn't been good to us this year either but we've been going on some of the worst times. Nice report. Gotta love getting the younguns involved with sizable fish.
