    Shark fishing surprise.

The plan for the day was to shark fishing east of the bank. I had a couple new crew members that just wanted to fight big fish. We leeft Green Harbor and steemed across a flat calm Cape Cod bay and tried to catch some bluefish for bait. After 30 minutes and no bluefish I decided to continue out to the shark spot I picked out the night before. We got to the spot but soon found the drift to be way to fast to hold bottom with jigs and since we still did not have bait I decided to find another spot. I headed back to the west and found a secluded spot away from other boats in 300 feet of water. We dropped two jigs and hooked up two beautiful haddock. I drop the chum bucket and now we are shark fishing. We went 3 hours without a sniff. We were drifting to the east and around 11:00 we were in 330 feet of water and Sean dropped his 14 oz. cod jig to the bottom. Within seconds he sets the hook on a big cod and begins reeling it off the bottom. His rod and reel outfit is a Shimano Calcutta and a fishermans outfitter 7' Striped bass live bait rod. The reel is loaded with 50 pound braid and a 40 pound leader. Anyhow the fish is comming up off the bottom and I see a quick flash and the "cod" is now dumping the reel in the first of two 50 yard runs. We now know that the cod is not a cod, but a nice little tuna. The fish came to the boat rather quick and I sunk the gaff right in the shoulders and the fish still being green almost tore my arm and the gaff off the boat. The fish taped out at 46". We ended up getting one 9' blue shark after and decided to run in after hearing radio rumors of storms with 60 knot winds pushing north from the Cannal. We did see some pretty scarry looking clouds on the way in but did not see any lightning or 60 knot winds.

Looks like you boated that fish at just the right time Dan -- that split ring was just about gone. Nice job.
