Dirks: Shad fans should be ready within week or two


John Punola, better known as the "Shad Man," said the Delaware shad are making their way up river but have not yet been seen in great numbers from Port Jervis and upriver. The shad should in better numbers within a week or two.

It's important to remember that there is no shad fishing on the Hudson starting this season. On the Delaware River, recreational anglers can keep three shad per day. No commercial fishing is allowed. It will be worth watching the fishing pressure on the Delaware for shad now that shad angling is banned on the Hudson.
