S of Shinnecock
heading out thursday after fishing the star island tourney two weeks ago. too many blue sharks, a nice tiger and no doggies. looking for mr mako or thresher. Caught a 312 thresher (12' 8") last year at secret spot in close same time last year. The week prior we had a 3.5 hour fight starting at 6pm as we were hauling in last bait in setup. Leadered and measured a very tired but alive 17 foot thresher (Tail to head). WAS HUGE. Not sure of the weight, but we let it live as it was very old. Estimating it at close to 550 lbs. anyone else chime in on the weight?

Welcome to the site from a fellow Long Islander, and congrats on the catch. Sounds like a really good day at the "office".
Oh yeah, your question.....I couldn't tell you what that thing weighed if you paid me. ![]()

I had one a few years ago. I was messing around on the back of a scallop boat off the 600x800 line off montauk. I had a hand line tied up wire leader. The capt was getting ready to hook it up on a dead skate or something. I said dont you think that fish has been around long enough . He said yea. I said no what the hell are we going to do with it. We can't do anything with it. Let it go. It was hanging around us for acouple hrs. I made a phone call to my freind who was fishing the star tourney. We had him up to the back of the scalloper. He landed the state record threasher. Im not saying that was the fish. But what ever it was had to push 450. That whip ill never forget. Just chillin out eating scallop guts.

fished today in shinnecock hole
caught and released three blue sharks and 5 bluefish. Not too bad on the bluefish thanl god for 8 miles out. Blue sharks ranged from 100just over 200 lbs. Lumpy seas, nice ride home though, Was hoping for a mako or threseher, but no such luck, 120 feet of water an 63 degree water temp. rain all the way in. nice day not working.
