anyone hear that there were two big fish taken at peaked hill yest?
i dont know about yesterday but today i looked at a nice 102" giant bluefin aboard the amazing grace which is a 28' betram very nice fish. i wish i was aboard
I know one of the stickboats got 9 fish earlier in the week.
you are sporty short killin kooks so dont worry about what the real tuna fisherman are catchin.....just go to the bank and kill your baby tuna and leave the big ones for the heavy hitters
I had planned on posting something before logging on and seeing this. The reason I was going to post something is in the last week I have seen and heard many of the rec boats getting fired up about giants being caught. That's great as they should.
But I distinctly recall being called a "momma killer" by the so called rec guys. Then it hit me last night. Every rec guy I know and on this site would sink a harpoon in a 650lb tuna in a millionth of a second. Actually it is many of the rec's dream to catch a fish like this.
My point is the recs are baby killers and momma killers. Kill anything if given the chance.
Atleast most of the commercial guys have the stance that the small fish should be protected. They have not spawned yet and a limited small fish season would be more appropriate. This wide open season long slaughter is an outrage. After Sept 1st a 65" fish is worth alot more to the future of the fishery released and swimming around the ocean than it is on the dock.
A 65" fish yeilds a hell of alot of meat so everyone's freezer should be stocked up by Aug 31st. If you haven't gotten a 65" fish for the freezer by Aug 31st too bad. This isn't little league where everyone gets to play 2 innings and gets 1 at bat. We're trying to protect a species within reason. After Sept 1 go practice catch and relase and have a blast. As an analogy my deer hunting friends occasionalyy don't get a deer during the season and the season closes on them. And they don't feel it's their right for the season to stay open until they get one.
Or recs can go after "trophy fish". I'm still trying to figure out what a rec guy is going to do with 450lbs of tuna meat. Give it away to the neighbors? Talk about an ego trip dragging a spawning size fish back to the dock just to hang it, pound your chest and then struggle to get rid of the meat. Becasue in most cases a rec guy who can land a 600lber has already put a few 65" fish on his boat and his freezer is already stocked.
Or you could try to find a commercial friend to sell it. Oops did I say that goes on?
I take 1 small fish a year. I can sleep at night.
I bet this BS talk would be different if the commercials could sell fish under 73"![]()
Huh? That makes no sense. Commercials are baby killers too because 74" fish have not spawned yet.
Fish under 80" have not spawned. It's not BS. It's science.
Why is this BS talk? Please give me some information that would make me think hammering away at juvenile fish all summer & fall is the right thing to do to ensure a healthy population for the future.
I am not trying to be a dick here with my posts on a little conservation. Wide open small fish take is a joke. A couple month season or a quota that is actually closed once reached would be much more realistic. You will thank me in 5 or 10 years if we practivce a little conservation. If we practice a little conservation we will ALL have some fish for the future.
I am about done screaming from the top of the mountain. Most of you will be glad becasue you can go back to burying your head in the sand and not have to think about this issue. Just assume the fish will be there in 5 years, you must be right. The lack of conscious and a little common sense about the fishery I have witnessed is ridiculous. All so guys can bring in a 10th 65" fish? What for? What the hell did you do with the other 1,000 lbs of meat that you need another?
I have already seen the tuna fishery in the northeast collapse once and we've been handed a gift. And apparently very few people are around from the first collapse because everyone is catch, catch catch and we're going to piss it away.
Whatever. I certainly hope I'm wrong. Actually they way you put it with so much knowledge behind your statement you must be right. KILL all the juveniles. Kill them ALL. Maybe I should cut the tails off all the juveniles that I catch the rest of the season. After all none of this matters. The juveniles are endless. Absolutley ENDLESS. Who cares if another 30-40 juveniles die this year. It doesn't matter. You're right. I was wrong. I'm pro kill it all now.
On further thought if I kill all the juveniles I catch then maybe one of the days you go out you will get shut out. And if I had released all my juveniles that day you would have caught one of the fish I released. You could have posted a picture of it, told everyone how great you are etc.
Just the chance that you can catch one of the juveiles that I RELEASE makes me want to kill every last one of them. Even if it's one in a million. "So you're saying there's a chance."
