Rookie Sharkin in ME
Tried sharkin yesterday, tuna was quiet so we gave it a shot....well, let's say it was pretty successful.
Power chumed 15 minutes, cut motor and deployed live macks on 2 rods, 30w and spinner.
5 minutes goes by 10' blue shark comes in. Eats both macks at once and takes off! Fight him for a few, get him close, huge tail slap and burst, crack! 30w breaks off, so now only on the spin rod. Battle him in, cut line and watch him swim. Cool.
10 minutes later, another shark comes in fast and eats the mack on the spin rod right off. Megan is on the rod and I help her grab it up and get ready. Next thing you know this fish takes off fast, and tail walks 15 feet right next to us!!! She has two hands on rod and I have one.
Holy crap! Now it turns and goes fully airborne next to the boat! It seemed to get closer than the tail walking and is coming towards us. This thing is big and full of piss. Then before we can blink it airs again. This time I look up and the shark is right in front of me as high as the t top on the boat and I can almost spit on it. Is the next jump
landing in the back of the boat????Too close! Not cool...
250 lbs of Mako lands in water, screws under the back end of the boat, makes another burst and breaks the 150lb mono off on something back there!!!!!!
Holy $**t! Did that really just happen???? Wow! Fight must have lasted 30 seconds or so....not sure but had my heart pounding for a while.
Unbelievable show of fish power and agility, nothing I have seen in person feet away ever before. Really cool. Fish was 6-7 feet long and bigger than me by a ways, and out jumped me by about 8'.
Come to find out our buddies fishing 1/4 mile from us hook a big shark a few minutes after our mako broke off, 50w rod / live mack and it airs them out a few times next to boat, lands on line so close and hard it snaps the rod right in half!!!! Ouch.
We had a few more big blue sharks come right in but wouldn't eat the macks, oh well fun to see them and try.
Crazy $**t for first ever shark fishing trip aboard the Happy Ending! We have pics and video of the big blue shark, none on the mako...happened too damn fast to get the camera going. Let's just say we will go again!
Props to J Shields at First Light Anglers for confirming the rigs and how to do it. I had the idea but nice to hear exactly what to do from someone who has done it before. Thanks
Really F-in cool

Here is a quick video of the blue dog. I know it's nothing exotic or sexy like a white marlin or anything, but it was a bunch of fun to try something new and have it work!
The mako was a hoot, wish we had film on that one! Next time...

Salon puppy
Love the sound of the drag on the Stella, worth every penny in my opinion for Tuna fishing...Congrats on a great sharkin experience, and hookin that Mako.

I think Admin is going to let me have this space
Don't shy away from dead bait. Blues can be lazy and a fresh, dead mack pitched to one certainly couldn't have hurt.
