FISHING REPORT --- September 2, 2011
Before I even attempt to predict how the fishing will be over the next few days let me say that I don't know a lot about what's going in our area. There weren't a lot of fishermen out there early in the week and the reports the last few days have been scant.
The Connecticut River is as brown as I've ever seen it, yet they're still catching crabs in the lower River. I visited Cornfield Point this morning and you can see large patches of brown water, Actually more brown than green water. On the edges where dirty meets cleaner water you can seen terns picking up baitfish. I also saw a quite a few logs heading west on the flood tide.
There is a lot of dangerous debris in the Connecticut River and spreading east and west into the Sound. Be careful.
STRIPED BASS --- The only thing I've actually had first hand reports on were a few bass this morning on Bartletts and some catches earlier around Race Point. The RI Beaches are starting to pick up a bit with reports of the first mullet run.
They're not on a hunger strike if you can find them. Head east.
BLUEFISH --- Almost everyone who's been on the water the last few days has reported running into blitzing bluefish somewhere in their voyage. The Race has been the epicenter of the action.
SNAPPERS --- Snappers have disappeared from the lower Connecticut River as far as we tell. I don't think they're gone from other waters just the muddy ones.
FLUKE --- Season closes Monday, September 5th (that's the last day) in CT. NY is open until 9/30 and RI on 12/31. We haven't heard any local reports this week, based on history and the way the previous week was going I'd head to Montauk or Block.
Contest Standings, no change this week. The last day fo the contest is Monday, September 5th.
1st --- 12.05# Jim Choinese
2nd ---11.30# Scott Pederson
3rd --- 11.00# Zeb Edwards
PORGIES --- No reports this week but they should still be strong on the local reefs.
BLACKFISH --- Season closed until October 1st.
BLUE CRABS --- Surprising some fair reports from the Connecticut River and good reports from the Oyster River.
BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE --- No new local reports this week. I don't think they'll be adversely affected by the storm.
BONEFISH --- No they're not running in Long Island Sound, but we're putting together a trip to Acklins
Island in the Bahamas for February 2012. Call us or link here for more details.
