FISHING REPORT --- August 26, 2011
As I'm writing this report I realize its irrelevancy as our waters are in the cross hairs of a major water moving storm. On Monday it will be a new world on the Sound. On the positive side this past weeks fishing generally wasn't so hot.
STRIPED BASS --- There's still some schools of bass along the Old Lyme Shoreline just not as many as the week before. Terns are working over small bait around Hatchetts most evenings plus some scattering schools from Black Point to the mouth of the Connecticut River. Plum Gut is a better shot if you want to cast to bass. There may or may not be birds working but casting a bucktail around the lighthouse or Cable Crossing sign should produce a few bass.
We weighed in a close to 50 pound bass from the mouth of the River this week, keep trying. We had no reports of bass being caught from the couch.
A trend we've seen this summer is the rewards are going to those giving the maximum effort. Anglers playing the night tides whenever they occur are getting some bass, even from shore.
BLUEFISH --- There is no shortage of blues around the local area. Southwest, Six Mile and to a lesser degree Hatchetts have mixed sizes of blues. We've been hearing of some 1-2 pounders around this week. Plum Gut and the Race have had some decent blues on the bottom but surface fish have been mostly little guys.
The WICC Bluefish Contest has been cancelled for this weekend and rescheduled for September 10 -11. You can register until September 9th..
SNAPPERS --- One of the brighter spots. Still some very good reports coming from the DEP Piers, Causeway and Blackhall River.
FLUKE --- Numbers have been dropping. This storm might start the fluke drive out of here. Montauk has had some good runs and Block has been hot for almost 2 weeks. It's by no means over but a change in tactics and location may be in order.
Contest Standings, no change this week.
1st --- 12.05# Jim Choinese
2nd ---11.30# Scott Pederson
3rd --- 11.00# Zeb Edwards
PORGIES --- Actually had a complaint this week of a poor catch. Other than that most angler have been elated. The big reefs such as Hatchetts and Bartletts have been good but some of the smaller reefs such as Cranes and Cornfield have been better.
BLACKFISH --- Season ends on Wednesday, August 31st. Reopens on October 1st.
BLUE CRABS --- Fair reports have come in this week for scoopers and I'm afraid that all the rain coming up this weekend won't help. Trappers did better this week in the Connecticut and Oyster Rivers.
BONITO, FALSE ALBACORE --- We finally had a first hand report of a few bonito caught in New Harbor on Block. Second hand reports say the Vineyard and Nantucket are having a decent run.
BONEFISH --- No they're not running in Long Island Sound, but we're putting together a trip to Acklins
Island in the Bahamas for February 2012. Call us or link here for more details.
