Fishing Report

FISHING REPORT --- July 29, 2011
STRIPED BASS --- The surface action is back at Hatchetts Reef, but they're getting tougher to get to bite. One day it's Slug gos, next it's Spooks. Some larger ones have been at the same spot hitting drifted eels on night flood tides. Reports from the Race have been slower while news from Plum Gut was improved. Some good reports also came in for tube and worming off Plum Island and the Sluiceway.
BLUEFISH --- The real small and very large blues are still at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The larges are being caught along Great Island while the harbor blues are being taken from the DEP Piers and the sand bar. Plum Gut has had some very good days this week.
The WICC Bluefish Contest is scheduled for August 27-28
SNAPPERS --- Reports still say the snappers are 4" with the run underway at the Causeway and lower River piers and docks. It's shaping up to be an average run.
FLUKE --- The complaints of shorts are increasing with the ratio back up there at 30 to 1. Long Sand Shoal has the highest ratio and on the other end the best chance of keepers is Black Point where you might only catch 4 fluke and 3 will be keepers and the best shot at a doormat. Several from there were weighed in this week. The mouth of the Connecticut River you might catch 20 and have a keeper or 2 with a slight chance of a doormat
PORGIES --- Most of the porgy reports were from bait seekers. Sizes were very good from most local reefs, but some great reports from the south side of Fishers Island.
BLACKFISH --- No fishermen reports but a skin diver has been seeing plenty of 'em off Waterford.
BLUE CRABS --- An improvement over last weeks report but don't expect it to be like last year. Decent catches are coming from the marinas and docks on the Connecticut River and also the Oyster River. The crab guru thinks there's hope for one more hatch in our area.
