FISHING REPORT --- April 29, 2011
STRIPED BASS --- Its off to a different start this year. We're hearing of good catches as far as size goes in the Connecticut River with lesser numbers. A lot of the catching is coming from the piers on sandworms or the tributaries going into the River.
The reports from the Great Island area have been slow coming in, but there hasn't been a lot of effort there. Maybe it's the weather or the flooding that has deterred fishermen from trying. I don't think we'll see the big numbers of schoolies that we've been used to on the lower Connecticut.
Migrating bass have reached Massachusetts now, if you can get out - go. The reports from Hamburg and the Salmon River have been good. The Lower Housatonic has also been very good.
BLACKFISH --- We've actually heard of some fish caught at the New Haven Breakwater and Southwest Reef this week. Tomorrow is the last day of the Spring season.
WINTER FLOUNDER --- Here too we heard of a few fish taken in the Niantic River earlier this week and two fish taken in the Old Saybrook area. The season runs through May.
FLUKE --- IT doesn't open yet in Connecticut until May 15th, but it opens in NY on Sunday.
UPCOMING SEMINARS
April 30th --- Saltwater Flyfishing School - still a couple of openings, call for details.
May 4th --- BONEFISH NIGHT --- 7 pm -- A talk and visual presentation on the how, where and what of bonefishing. Chip Bates will share his expertise on how you can stalk and connect with one of the most challenging and rewarding types of fishing.
May 11th --- RIGGING EELS --- 7pm -- a hands on class on how to rig an eel for casting. Call for details.
2011 CT, RI, and NY FISHING REGS -- We're still waiting for NY to publish theirs before we can print the sheet.
