Rivers End Tackle fishing report, Saybrook, 7-2
FISHING REPORT --- July 2, 2010
STRIPED BASS ---- Well they've slowed up at the Race and picked up at Long Sand Shoal and have been on their game at Six Mile Reef. We have also been getting some reports of surface action on some of the reefs from Branford to Old Lyme. The Connecticut River is still on course for half the action of the previous week. The Sluiceway has also had a good few days with some daytime trolling umbrellas and bucktails.
Word from the RI Beaches has been slow this week.
Bunker are still hard to come by locally, a few hickory shad have moved into the Connecticut River but not in good numbers.
BLUEFISH --- They've moved up in numbers this week with some schools of them taking hold on Southwest Reef and moving in with the bass at Six Mile and Long Sand Shoal. The Race has been spotty and Plum Gut has better numbers.
FLUKE --- The mouth of the Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal, Soundview and Gardiners have a load of short fluke. The ratio exceeds 30 to 1. Bigger baits helps cull out some of the smaller ones but a 16" fluke will hit a whole squid. Deeper waters have better sizes, though not all keepers. The traditional doormat grounds off Hatchetts and Black Point has yielded some bigger one but its a long wait between hits. Block still has dogfish and the RI South Shore has the best bet for travelers.
PORGIES --- Some improved catches this week from Southwest Reef.
BLACKFISH --- season opened yesterday, no reports yet.
BLUE CRABS ---- "I hate to make predictions especially about the future"-Yogi Berra. Its shaping up to be a good season. Its been an early and strong start. Good catches are coming from the DEP Piers the Oyster and Lieutenant Rivers. They're already seeing them on the marina pilings.
