FISHING REPORT ---- July 16, 2010
STRIPED BASS --- Shallow water daytime fishing has come to a halt locally. There's been some random schools of medium sized bass showing up at Long Sand Shoal, Southwest Reef, Cornfield, Hatchetts, Bartletts and the Mouth of the Connecticut River with no pattern to when or where they show up. They seem to be on some medium baitfish when they do. The usual squid run at Watch Hill never gained much momentum.
Nights are a different story, Long Sand Shoal has been good after dark. The Race is also a good bet.
BLUEFISH ---- They are approaching what might be their peak summer numbers. They've finally taken hold in numbers at the Race and have been good at
Plum Gut. Locally Southwest Reef has been good. Snappers are fair in the River, remember its early.
FLUKE ---- Reports of doormats have slowed the last few days with more just legal fluke being caught. The Connecticut River, Long Sand Shoal and Soundview still highly shorted. A few better ratios being caught at Gardiners and the Ruins ( 21" limit there). Misquamicut has even slowed down or has been dragged out.
PORGIES --- Numbers are starting to come up at the local rockpiles, sizes are still very good. We've been hearing better reports from Hatchetts, Hens and Chickens, Southwest, Falkners and Bartletts. A lot more reports of a good sized sea bass mixed in.
BLACKFISH ---- Some vague ( some reliable bragging but not spots disclosed) of some shallow water blacks. Hatchetts is the only spot that anyone has admitted catching blacks on.
BLUE CRABS ---- Some jumbo winter over crabs around plus a lot of sub legal ones. Its good in the main body of the Connecticut River by the DEP Piers and the backwaters behind Great and Calves Islands.
