SANDWICH - Sandwich police have identified a fisherman who died after being swept into Cape Cod Bay early this morning as Robert Samuelson, 43, of Plymouth.
Another man, Gregory McSharry, 32, of Carver, was rescued and survived the ordeal that began around 12:20 a.m. at the mouth of Old Harbor Creek near the Sandwich boardwalk.
The two men had been fishing when the current carried them about 200 yards out and at least a quarter of a mile east along the bay, Sandwich Fire Department officials said.
Samuelson, who was wearing waders, got stuck in the outgoing tide and McSharry took off his waders and went after him in the 65-degree water, said Sandwich Fire Department Capt. Timothy McMahon

I heard about this on line sat night and was sickened also. I too met and was impressed by Bob only this summer, also at FB&T. As has been said elsewhere I found him a true gentleman, a rarity in our sport.

Any desire to fish Sunday went out the window. There is a lot on other forums about what happened and where.

To me it causes reflection on some of the crazy risks I have taken in the past both from shore and from boat and a realization renewed to refocus my safety awareness such that I don't ever find myself in a corner I can'r get out of.

My heart goes out for his friends and family; there but for the god go many of us....

Sammy was fishing the outgoing tide at Scorton's creek with Greg. Greg made absolutely heroic efforts to save his friend after ripping off his own waders but it was an impossible situation. That 8' drop where they were can be unforgiving with one small misstep. Only consolation is Sammy passed doing what he loved most.
