I am a new member to this site and I have been told that this is the site to join by other fisherman who frequent this site!

My first question I would like to post:

Why isn't down riggers popular in New England it appears that leadcore line is the method of choice?

I fish tourneyments out of Gulf Breeze FL for Mahi and Wahoo and the method I was taught involved downriggers. Advantages, used any pole or line setup, very accurate depths control, single and double trolling line options to mention a few.

So I'm curious to hear your thoughts, hopefully I will get more wisdom from my fellow anglers here in NE.

    Thank you

    Inshore:

I feel that downriggers are not used in the Northeast due to the rockie nature of the coasts. On the south side of Cape Cod, MV and the Elizabeths we fish short serveral hundred yard streches of water. We want our lures almost in contact with the rocks and sand... sometimes bouncing off the bottom.

The belief is that all the short run, circling back to the start of the rip, combined with actually bouncing bottom sometimes, makes downriggers a pain... if not out right dangerous.

If we ran long distances on open water, more than 5 feet off the bottom, then downriggers would make sense. But when actually in contact with the bottom, downriggers are not a good idea.

    Offshore:

Downriggers would make sense for mahi and wahoo (which is more of a accidental catch thana target species... not enough wahoo to really target). I think we don't own Downriggers inshore so we don't use them offshore. Some guys use other method like planer boards to get deeper. But in general, I feel deeper water trolling is under-explored up here. I think that if someone put in the time and really dialed it in, it could really score offshore.

It is just that by nature, New Englanders are traditionalists...

Oh, BTW, welcome to the site and the area. You will like it here. The fishing eason is too short. But we find other ways to entertain ourselves when that white frozen water is in the air.

I new there had to be a reason, I just needed ask and now I understand why why leadcore is the method of choice. I will now invest into learning this art of fishing and add that technique to my limited arsenal!

    THANK YOU!

    Inshore:

If you really want to invest in learning a new method.... and you want to learn the traditional NE way to fish inshore, learn wire line instead of lead core.

It is not that hard but you will go through a few spools of wire (cut off the reel and thrown away) in the first year. You will get the hang of it. The hardest part is getting the albright knot through the guides when letting the line out, then mastering depth control.

Wire line is more effective than lead core at getting the lures down. Some people will disagree with me on this. But most good striper trollers up here drag wire. It is a PITA, but it is worth it.

100% Truth right there. Wire is the way to go even though it can be a total PITA.

welcome reel!! i live/fish in boston (primarily), but fish down that ways every few weeks come may through november. family lives on the river. we leave from niantic river and fish all over the bay, bp, the sound, the race...pretty much all over. we fish lead core and wire (some reels are spooled with wire, some with lc) - more of a personal preference imo. sounds like you're pretty much geared up, but if not, one rod/outfit to have is a braided outfit that can handle 3way setups...whether it be 3waying eels or bucktails...you're gonna need it!!! yeah boyeee!!! good luck down there, it's a great fishery down that way!
