Absolutely invest in a set of needles. I was always stubborn and sanded the ends, because I was taught that way, but I switched to needles this year. I will never go back. They come out flawlessly. I've gone to 12 ft fingers just because it is so easy. it takes about 5 mins to do one with needles, at least on dacron. Cant speak for jerry brown, never used it and never will.

Before spending your hard earned $ on splicing needles try this. Forget that sandpaper B.S. and try this. Cut your mono so that the very end is flat. You do not want any sharp ness to the end of your mono. Next I take a lighter to the main-line (Mono) and quickly singe the end and imediately I use my fingers to mold the mono tip blunt like a mushroom cap. That way as I am splicing the mono inside the hollow core or dacron it wont want to keep poking out. Don't worry about the time it takes you. I took me almost 8 hours over the course of an entire week to do all 6 of my reels about a month ago. Make sure your doing your consecutive half hiches for at least an inch at both ends of the splice and then a few times in between. Good luck and practice and time spent makes perfection.

no double crimp no sanding. just cut the mono at an angle and work with it. if you spin alot of shot and can do 12 15 feet really quick. 12 is all you need can get by with 8.. usually they stay tie off the mono to dacron spot poke the end out of the dacron and burn it a little. pull it back in. if you are worried about your crimping and crimping lite stuff is tricky just tie an offshore knot and it wont move. this will stop the crotch breaks.
i got a nice serving wip from basil so you can wipp your shots perfectly. maks them nice and tight and runs thru the guides perfectly. hitches work too Last edited by Dogfish87; 07-21-2009 at 08:47 PM. |
