    Quota update

    Just updated as of 9/30
on 9/10 was at 131 MT
    9/30 now at 285

so for the 20 days 154mt came in, more than for the entire year to date as of 9/10

if you use an average weight of 400 #'s that's 847 fish or 42 per day

it will be interesting to find out what the actual average weight is (I don't know where to get that from)

I believe the total quota for general category is 538.9mt. So 254 mt left before it closes.

I do not have the numbers in front of me but I think it was between 300 and 350 mt. There were more general harpoon landings last year in the first 3 months, which added to that total.

There is a MASSIVE amount of fish offshore and around Canada this season. One Canadian quota just waited all summer to open up, and then opened and caught the entire quota in 2 days (actually went over a bit). And they are expecting to do the same in their other areas.

If only we had sufficient bait inshore. And with the midwater boats now pounding the area our boats are fishing in offshore, who knows how long that will last. Canada has it right by not allowing that gear.

Which one? I am heading up to fish with a crew in PEI next week.

    From "The Gardian" newspaper

Bluefin tuna season opens MondayPublished on September 30th, 2010

Fishers will be permitted one fish per licence for first two weeks
Topics : Tuna Advisory Committee , P.E.I. Fishermen , Nova Scotia The Tuna Advisory Committee of the P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association has confirmed the bluefin tuna fishery opens Monday, Oct. 4.

The committee met this afternoon to respond to concerns raised by fishers and buyers that too many fish will be landed and severely depress the price for bluefin in the international marketplace.

Committee chairs Walter Bruce, Doug Fraser and Kenny Drake are announcing the decision of the committee that fishers will be permitted to land one fish per licence in the first two weeks of the season. The committee will meet again to consider arrangements for the balance of the quota to be fished after the first two weeks based on landings.

The fishery in the Gulf area of Nova Scotia was completed in two days earlier this week, causing a glut problem in preparing and shipping the fish to market. The tuna advisory committee wants to avoid the same scenario playing out for the Island fleet.

These midwater boats are bad news. They crush the area off the Cape and then move out to the offshore area. There is no shortage of tuna in this part of the ocean, just a shortage of bait. There is a reason Canada catches them like they do- no midwater trawlers. As soon as fish show up somewhere here, these boats go and ruin it.

Picture from one of the guys on Georges, look how close the boats are coming.
