    Quick Question about EPIRBS

before I make a purchase today.

For a 27 ft boat what is the requirement for commercial fishing? 406 Cat 1 or Cat 2?

I've looked this up in several different areas and can't get a definitive answer.

I don't want to spend a bunch of money and get the wrong one.

im pretty sure the only difference about the cat 1 and 2 is the bracket that mounts it.

Fairly sure Cat 2 is good for boats <36'. Call LRSE to be sure.
    Cat 1 has hydrostatic release.

While we're on the subject,I bought mine last year, brand new.For Gen cat,I believe I'm still good for this year?I think a brand new unit doesn't need the batteries or release checked until the third year?Am I correct?

    Inspection

Hydrostatic releases are usually good two years from the date of purchase. The dealer will mark the date of the expiration. Batteries are good for five years and if you look closely you will see a blue putty in the screws. If this is removed it will prove you opened it up and void any warranty. Remember to register it as it is useless unless registered and make sure those contact numbers are people who they can get a hold of on shore.

EPIRB, RAFT are two pieces of lifesaving equipment everyone should carry who goes offshore weather pleasure or commercial. Remember to inspect it every few months according to the directions.

The two pieces of equipment above are like insurance, you have it but hope the hell you never need to use it.
