    A question for twofinbluna

Chris, I just looked at the quota through July. Looks like rod and reel are down from last year at 418 fish vs. 460 but harpoon is way up.
General cat harpoon at 276 vs 74 last and harpoon cat 208 vs 122.
So this year more than double last.

What's your take on the reasons for this?

Because every calm day in June and the first 2 weeks of July was a freaking Turkey Shoot on the backside - no planes needed.

We have had a lot of fish around this season and it was not just off Cape Cod...

Early on we had decent weather, since about mid-July it has quickly turned downhill and has really stopped us in our tracks. Without multiple days in a row of decent weather, the surface does not settle down and the fish just do not really want to show. We would have caught the harpoon quota a month ago if the weather had stayed OK.

As for the general quota, they are picking away at them. The big question is whether the Georges thing will happen again after what the herring pair trawlers have been doing to that spot all summer. They are up to around 23,000 metric tons of herring taken from almost that same exact spot our guys were catching tuna last year. Fish are all over the place in Canada, but with those pair trawlers screwing things up on our side of the line its anyone's guess as to what will happen. Hopefully either Chatham or Goerges will produce, but that will mean that the herring sticks around and will those damn boats out there that may not happen. Keep your fingers crossed.

There are a handful of boats that have had very good seasons so far...

Tyler, I have been hearing different. Are you planning on making the big ride in your new boat?
