The Q gets a center rigger

Spring Project: adding a center rigger. Hardest part: tracking down a 12' piece of 1 1/4" aluminum. Took a week to located a piece over 8', but finally found one in New Bedford for $30 (just a hair cheaper than a center rigger from Lees or Taco...)

Will experiment with pulling 13" bars but the application may be limited to pulling a bally...

Nice, maybe you could run a line to the forward cleat from the tip to pull bigger bars if needed.

True. As you can see in this picture, that's exactly what I have done with the outriggers. It will take some experimenting to figure out what this thing can handle.

Great concept there PartmentJ, but we all know that these pelagics only eat stuff tight to the stern in the wash!

Atleast thats what all the pros always tell ya.

    3 tall riggers

on an 8' beam is going to make it challenging to turn into fish more than a few degrees at a time. You just might be better off w. a bar down the center and ballyhoo on the wings to allow tighter turns.

That's right EJ, tuna eat the transom of the Q. Especially those bluefin on the bank...

I have been contemplating that LB. It is already challenging running 3 bars; one of each rigger and one off the rod tip down the center. When staggered properly I can turn pretty tight on fish but it's still a challenge.

Ideally I will be able to run a bar way back off the center and then clear up my space in tight and run two more bars (one off each rigger) and a bally off the flatline (maybe 2). This should give me the ability to close my turning radius, get one bar way back out of outboard exhaust bubbles, and drag a bally.

Or... I can run ballys off the riggers, bar off the center way back, bar off a rod tip just inside the ballys....

    Thoughts?

    Jackson,

I run a painters pole as an uprigger. Not quite as tall or as sturdy as your construction, but it works. I usually start my bars in a diamond shape and adjust (usually by dropping back) as the day goes on.

1 off the painters pole way back (rod and painters pole in the leaning post holders)

2 off the transom rod tips or "flatlined" with rubber bands on the trailer eyes (rods in the furthest back holders)... I know don't run with your bars in the water... but it seems to work ok.

1 just out of the wash from the rod tip of the second rod in the leaning post.

Then on my other two (mid transom) rod holders I run ballys, jets or divers on "outrodders." Sometimes I swap up the "flatline" bars with ballys and put the bars on the mid-transom holders. This puts the meat in the middle instead of the outside but you sacrafice the ablity to spin as quickly.

It is not ideal. But it is cheap and seems to work fine...

Shoot me a PM on where you found the 12 foot pipe. I may be interested in upgrading my $15 painters pole to your $30 pipe.

    Mike
