Saw a single fish today, but looked him straight in the eye, so no longer a question in my mind they are in the area....
But I covered some major ground Monday and Tuesday, and covered the entire area I had fish in June the last few years all day today, and didnt see much sign of Chuck other than the one definite I.D. So the thoughts running through my head about being nuts and needing some help for actually being out on a dedicated inshore tuna hunt in early May were uctually unjustified....However, I really saw no reasonable indicators that any tuna in any kind of numbers are present. I only marked 3 fish the entire day, and it was right where I saw the single fish out of water late in the afternoon. This fish in question was north of 500 pounds easy, and moving north at a brisk pace, but not up crashing or anything. Basically what one would expect to see this time of year, a lone large heading to his summer digs to the north. Heard one other boat on the VHF who said he had a visual, and saw one other boat with Gold on board and 3 balloons off the stern.
There was amazing amounts of life, a pod of white side dolphin that had to be 6 miles long by a mile wide, and tons of whales. Also saw my first big flock of shearwaters amongst the tern and gannet, a sure sign the bite is about to happen.
Did manage to land a bunch of bruiser pollack, a few decent market cod, tons of short cod, and a bunch of topwater stripers and bluefish off the race in the afternoon.
I do have tuna "scouting" trips all weekend(yes tuna charters....no, I am not the king of marketing, there are just as many addicts out there as me is all) but my personal take is any kind of real bite will be a week or so out yet. It truely is just a matter of a few tides at this point, and the way I see it someone has to be the first.
