    Poon Dart knot....

I know this is probably way to beginner a question and may sound dumb...but I am a worrier.

I have limited knot tying skills that I am VERY confident in and I am looking at my 300.00 poon and scared to death I am going to have a failure that allows it to drop to the depths of the atlantic. For Sharking I have 150 feet of 3/8 line (basically anchor line without the loop) and an orange A2 buoy. the dart already has 6 feet of Cable pre-crimped on. I know people have several suggestions for knots, but I am thinking palomar in the 3/8 line to both the dart cable loop and the A2 buoy. Is this not a smart idea for any reason? Thanks!

I am assuming that you have already attached a ring to the end of your poon? If you have I would run your dart line through the ring, because that is what will keep your poon from sinking to the bottom. Then I would tie the knot of your choice to the cable dart line. If you do not have alot of confidance in your knot you can also wrap your knot in electrical tape. Just be carefull with the braided cable attached to the dart. It is great for sharks but I have heard that it could cause the dart to tear out of a thrashing tuna. I prefer to run my dart line right to the dart.

Just tie a bowline and tape it up.
add a half hitch with the tag end before taping for extra security.

should be a given that everyone on a boat knows how to tie a bowline....

Thanks, yes I do have a stainless carabiner on the end of the poon to hook onto the line. I do know how to tie a bowline but I have never been a big fan of the knot even though it has been used forever...I cannot explain why just an oddity about me I guess!

I was just thinking about what Tuna Meltdown said and was wondering when you run the dart line through the loop/carabiner on the end of the Poon handle what happens should the dart pull free??? I would guess there is a high probability of the poon handle going to Davey Jones locker NO??? Maybe a seperate line to the handle this way it can be taken out of the way and also ensures it doesn't go swimming to the bottom.

I have it rigged like the diagram, Just don't want the loop to loop. the carabiner is small enough to only slide over the line ,it cannot make over the dart or even the cable loop with a knot. Was just curious is a person have ver used a palomar in 3/8 rope before and if there was any issue...
but thank you all for responding so far...it is appreciated!

to me a stick is a disposable tool, sometimes you loose, or break them.. thats also why we dont spend 300+ bucks for one..
usually make them from 1" i.d. hyflyer pole. stick a brass insert into it, and wind in a stainless shank.. i use the stainless because i got tired of the rust stain the steel shank left.. done for about 40 bucks.. you can weight it if you so desire..
but i guess to answer the question of pulling the dart, you could put a 1" brass ring on the tagline to the end of the harpoon, then run your mainline thru that straight to the lilly, a bowline has worked for me for years, i use a 2' loop so the knot is up high, away from the lilly, so you dont blow a huge hole in something you want to be presentable when you get back to the dock.
