Time for a Poon question. What size fish do you guys usually use the Poon on? Bluefin that I am talking about here. 60 inches plus, or more like 100 pounds plus? Does it matter how many people are on the boat as to if you can't stick two gaffs into the fish, then you would grab the Poon? Thanks for the help.
I believe a gaff or fly gaff is fine up to 80" or so.... 2 people can handle those fish.... Bigger than 80" a dart from the poon through the gill plate is as good as it gets....
I think that you want to take it on a case by case basis- if I feel that there is a decent chance that the fish can be lost boat side, I have no problem hitting them with the POON (e.g. long fight with a small leader, inexperienced captain on the wheel, etc). For giants, you would have a tough time convincing me that there was ever a situation that you wouldn't throw the POON.
THERE IS MOST DEFINITELY SOMETHING VERY INTOXICATING ABOUT THAT ONE MOMENT ....AS HE SPIRALS EVER SO CLOSER....SOMETHING VERY EXCITING ABOUT WHITE KNUCKLING A POON INTO A BIG OL CHEEK HAM .........OF COURSE I HAVEN'T POONED ANY MORE THAT A HANDFUL .....BUT NONETHELESS....MY KNUCKLES SURE WERE WHITE.
