My buddy Jesse called me thursday and asked if I could fish with him and his buddy Paul sunday. Of course I said yes! His buddy Paul has never caught a tuna before, although he has fished for them for almost 4 years! I assured Jesse he would get his first on sunday. Saturday night I could not sleep, fell asleep at 12, only to wake up at 1:30....back to sleep and I wake up before my 330am alarm. Get down to GH at 430, despite the 530am meeting time, I was pretty excited to fish. Run the boat out into a SW wind blowing 15knots. Arrive at the SWC to see a lot of birds working around the draggers. Decide to put the lines in and troll east. 30 minutes into the troll and we have a boil on the left rigger. Take a couple cranks to tease him up, another boil. Take another few and drop it back, another boil. Another few cranks and nothing...crap, what made this fish not want to commit. Oh well, continue on the troll. Lots of fish popping ones and twos all day long, but we didn't even have a fish come up. My buddy on the boat "bilda" doubles up right next to us dragging the same things we are. Now im starting to get aggrevated. After another hour or so, we decide to make a big loop. We run east into the deep water, down to Peaked hill, and see nothing.230pm...Back to the corner we go. Still fish popping ones and twos. Throw the lines back out, and we see a boat next to us come tight on bait. We watch them land the fish, as we mark some fish down 60-90 feet. We stop the boat, still with the troll lines out. As the boat next to us hauls in their fish, we cheer them on. 245pm All of a sudden the elastic on the flat line x-rap rod snaps, and the 50wide is singing!!!! WERE ONNNNNNN!!!!!!!! I kept the line tight as Jesse and Paul clear the other lines, Jesse grabs the wheel, Paul settles into the harness, and were off to the races. The boat that had previously landed the fish next to us has its back turned towards us. The fish brings us right into there boat, and as we are about 30 yards off there stern, they notice we are there, and are quick to motor out of our way, even with baits still out, thanks guys! The fish behaved during the fight, no running under the boat, and it stayed up high. We get color about 13 minutes into the fight. The fish comes up, does 2 death circles, and on his third I drill him with the poon. Jesse grabs a gaff, sticks it in the fish's head, goes to pull up, and the head breaks off the gaff! He grabs the only other small gaff on the boat, and that one bends. At that point I did not want to loose this fish, I stick my hand into its gills, and he sure did not like that. A few thrashes, and twists of my arm, jesse grabs the poon line, and we haul the fish into the boat. YAAA BABY. The look on Pauls face was priceless, finally he lands his first BFT, and a nice fat 68'' fish to boot. Congrats Paul, you did great on the rod!!!
pics to come
It must have been your sleep deprivation that turned you into KAMIKAZE KAPTAIN.......lol I mean, who's ever heard of someone grabbing the gills to land the fish....?!!
