Can't wait to hear you BIGTIME commercial "Tuna fishermen" all crying next year when there's no herring around during a bite. My guess is you all will start blaming the big bad lobsterman for buying up all "your" bait. HAHA what a joke
Funny, NORPEL reps were at today's herring meeting talking about how next year will be and how only one of their boats was leaving. Seems that this talk of closing was simply a ploy to put pressure on the managers to help them out.
And as to the bait issue- there was never any issues getting bait before the 150 foot pair trawlers came here. In fact, bait only got more expensive once they came on the scene due to the fact that it was harder to catch since they crushed the stocks, and also because there was the added demand coming from the markets in Egypt, Eastern Europe, etc. These boats have been nothing but a problem for the tuna fleet.

What are you talking about, tuna3? The situation next year will be essentially identical to what it was this year, with the strong possibility of more haddock quota to let the big pair trawlers pound the crap out of Georges even harder. Lobstermen have and will continue to buy most of the available bait. Thats just a fact of life. But you would be hard pressed to find a tuna fisherman who would choose having pair trawlers around with a little more bait supply than having no pair trawlers around with a little less bait.
And if NORPEL and others are so worried about the tuna fleet having enough bait, how about saving some of that fish they are shipping to Africa and leaving it here?
Anyone have an update as to the current status of Norpel? Did they end up fully shutting down or will they be sticking around. Seems that with the final submission of framework 46 that they got what they wanted, a 500% increase in the haddock cap.
