Saw on the news that everybody fishing in saltwater is going to have to get a license. They say it will be free the the first year then after that they say they are going to start to charge people.Starting Jan,1 2009.This state really sucks!!!!
It's not the state it is the FEDS. The Feds are requiring all SW anglers to be licensed. The states are just going to jump on the bandwagan first. This should be no surprise to anyone as this has been on the radar for the last few years. The CHB guys have been lic. for the last 4 years at $10 per year. Just another hoop to jump through. Capt. Eric
As part of the renewal of the mangesun stevens act (sp?), the law now requires a registry of all saltwater anglers. It doesn't require a license, or permit, or anthing of the kind.
The purpose of the registry is to allow researchers better access to who actually is likely to have been fishing - rather than who lives close to the water. In the past, phone surveys have been innefective because more likely than not the person answering the phone doesn't go fishing in salt water. This allows them too call people who are likely to have been fishing. That's all.
The feds are establishing a default registry which will be FREE until 2011. After that there will be a nominal charge. The states are free to maintain there own registry, and people registered with a state list won't be required to use the federal system.
So the states are taking this as an opportunity to raise money by issuing a Saltwater Angling license.
It's a money grab by the states, since the license fees will go to the state rather than the federal registry, and will likely exceed what the feds would charge.
