NWC today
We were out there today, lines wet at 5:37am, tuna sightings by 6am.
The tuna were launching out of the waters until about 7:30/8 and then it went dead quiet. We had high hopes but didn't hook up. We called it at 10:30 so we could get a half day of work in. I know of only one boat that hooked up, the charters that we were friends with didn't get lucky, just a ton of big fat blues (largest was 36", about 15 #s) beating up the rigs. The boat that did hook up was a pump-out boat (out of Charlestown ) I even think they borrowed the squid bars. They had only two lines in and landed a 120# fish - or so the story goes. I do know they landed a tuna, as I saw them bleeding it out but can't confirm size. We had 4 lines in, equipted to the gills, and no luck...oh well, we were psyched for them regardless.Anyway, I have to wait to pop my tuna cherry but I hope that day comes sooner than later. In the meantime, I'm just enjoying the whale show. |

At least you were out there trying, and saw them also. Your time will come soon. A lot of other boats out there today?

Thanks all for the well wishes, wasn't looking for sympathy just trying to get you guys a report for once - trying not to just be a taker here on the site.
TM, thanks for the hook up on the info!!! You're my hero, you know that. Dunn, there were quiet a few boats out there. Made me think no one works on Tuesdays anymore ![]() My ghetto sled is going to be kicking it in the harbor with the other weekend warriors this Sunday, so hopefully you tuna slayers will get them this weekend! ~bernzy |

I was also on the nwc yesterday morning and saw the all the tuna jumping everywhere. Nothing like getting your hopes up than seeing them busting all over the place. We landed my first tuna ever at 8:30. The tuna was 53 inches and the scale says 85# but it felt heavier. I wasn't sure if I would ever get a tuna. This is my 2nd year trying. My boat is the My Wife's Raise a 23 foot neptune. I was running 5 rods, 4 squid bars and a deep swimming plug in the center. I got the tuna on the plug. I just kept fishing where we saw them jumping, I wasn't leaving fish to find fish.

I haven't fished up there, but have caught a tuna or two.
Here are some of the things we do here in the winter for Giants. 1. An observation - if you are catching 100-120lb fish, I probably would be using 80, maybe 100lb flouro leader. For length at least half a skeen connected with a 150lb spro. 2. I would be stretching leader and storing it large coils so it had no memory. I would not be storing it on the reels at night. 3. I would be cleaning my leader with an alcohol wipe or something every time I checked my bait. 4. For lures I have used a lot of Islanders and Bluewater Candy Jags with two pack ballyhoo and a 10/0 hook. Using lighter leader, I might go with islander JR or mini Jags. 5. Run your planers to get it down to where the fish are. Even though you might be seeing ones on top, your bite might come deep. Sometimes if they are on top, we can't buy a bite. Look for the deeper marks around bait, upside U's and other things on the scope that tell you your on feeding fish and don't leave. |

If I wasn't clearing weeds I was rerigging because of the blue fish. 6 bluefish total all good size 10 to 15#. would have been fun to catch if we caught them on something other than 50 and 80# gear
