That's awesome good luck with them........
Catch em up!!
Dunn,
I get the butt extensions for the rod holders. They are well worth the price. You should see the shorty I have and see the rub marks.
Also for the planer you will need to LOCK in the rod. Once you get a strike and the planer trips the rod has a tendency to jump up from lack of tension and the rod may jump outta the holder.
I don't want to see you out on the bank this year in scuba gear!!!![]()

as the 70 in question hit me on the way by, caught on the gunwale and exploded the single stitched commercial safety strap.
What problem are you trying to solve with an 80 planer in NE? I have no doubt that you can catch a rat or three that way, but winching in a 53" fish on an 80 is less than exhilerating.
I plan on getting the extensions for the short bent butt's, seeing there will be at least three rods on the boat with short bb's. The planer rod is either going to have a long bent butt or a straight butt, most likely a long bb. There also will be safety lines on every rod, from the second they come on the boat until the second they come off. Too much money for the gear, plus I wouldn't want to have to go spend even more money for the scuba equipment!![]()
Backman, an 80 is being used mostly just to be able to run a planer off of it. Try for some of those fish that everyone marks, but just don't come up to the surface and attack a bar or chain or whatever. You also never know what could be down there, maybe something over 73".(Hey I can wish right?) If an 80 gets old with the footballs, then it can always be put away until some giant chunk/kite trips come around.

Dunn- hey, question for ya- planer? I've been toying with the idea of installing a downrigger......whatdya think of planer vs a downrigger? you thinkin of running a planer down 50-90' or more? My Dad used to run 4- Big Jon elec downriggrs fishing for Kings & Cohos in Lk Ontario- running down 50-150' or more...I too, like you have visions of running a deep line below my tuna spread.....
I am no expert on planers or downriggers or anything for that matter. I am totally a newbie to all of this. Hopefully someone with mucho experience can chime in here and explain why this vs that is better and such. The reason why im going with the planer is to me it sounds like it is a lot easier to use then a downrigger. Also, just from reading the boards, a lot of the bite down in NC has come on planers for the giants, or so it seems, so why wouldn't the planer work up here on their little brothers? I am always willing to give a different strategy a shot a couple of times. Hopefully I will have a couple reports in the comming months and will let you know how the planer works. I can't wait to try it out though. If you do decide to go with one and need help rigging it up, watch Wahoonbox's video, I hope this like will work for you.
