My son and I caught our one and only fish last year November 7th and this year, we had not hooked up with a tuna until today. We decided to head out to the Bank because of the predicted light winds and long period swell. We left Sesuit at 6:45 and ran out to the #1 can outside of the harbor and filled the livewell and then some with macks, although they were mainly tinkers. We caught about 250 macks in about an hour which we were planning to use for chunk bait in the bay if we could not make it out to the Bank.
The seas on the Bank were around 5-7 feet, but a nice gradual swell. We got to the Bank at around 9:15, and were greeted with very many birds, but unfortunately, right as the early morning bite died off. Stuck it out at the SW Corner for awhile and headed east. Not much life out there but decided to put out a couple of macks on balloons and start chunking. Cut up about 150 mackerel and let them drift behind the boat. I decided to take a break from chunking and, right away, the line on the Penn VSW 50 went off. My son got into the harness and fought the fish for about 10 minutes before we briefly saw color. Because of the short fight, I thought that the tuna might be in the slot limit, but it promptly ran off about 150 yards of line. My son fought the fish for another 35 minutes with 2 scares as the line almost went right under the prop twice. I lip gaffed the fish after a 45 minute fight and we revived it while estimating its length. The fish was somwhere between 70 and 73 inches and very fat. Popped the Gami circle hook out of the corner of the mouth and off he went. I realized on the way home that my wife had put 2 bananas in the cooler but what an end to the season!
Last year, we caught a 64" fish on November 7th at about the same time of the day in the same place. Definitely a sigh of relief for my wife and the addiction continues...
