    Whupped

That big pig destroyed me. I had to do two days more after our trip, Tom, and I am feeling the pain. That setup was inadequate to handle a fish of those proportions in this cold water. The 8'6" rods are fun on the low 60 inch class, but not good at lifting fish over 175 pounds from the deep. That fish was north of 85 inches and 350 pounds, and was pissed off something good. The only way to even get the chances we had at landing it we needed to tag team this thing and keep constant pressure on it under heavy drag of 30 pounds(measured with scale). I have been involved in enough of these tussles with the larger variety on this gear to know if they go past the hour and half mark they usually end in heartbreak. it is also unfair to the fish to leave it under lighter drag for 3 or 4 hours only to break it off at the end. I would rather get a chance to throw the dart like we did while it is very green then the latter. As for missing, I felt pretty good about when and where I threw, I was presented an opportunity on a huge fish early in the fight and I took it. Had the fish not been 12-15 feet under the surface and vertical, I would have sunk it home. The shaft hit off the toad's head, and he dumped 75 yards immediately. The shot was clear of the line, and we had it back to color two more times before the thinng won its freedom. I feel very fortunate to have even fought this thing like we did with incredible teamwork and effort, and the hit that Tom got will replay all winter long for me, watching that TOAD explode from the depths and then burn away at mach 1. That hit and resulting run was one of the best I have ever witnessed.

As for that fish we killed, it taped at just a hair under 70 inches and was rotund. The belly weighed 10 pounds and had tons of whiting in it. The Toro was incredible, 4 inches thick and marbled like proscuitto. It looked like I had dipped my knife and hands in crisco shortening when I was done carving it.
