    Excellent point!

Every single pound of this 50 MT will be comprised of breeding class individuals aggregating in the Gulf of Mexico in order to spawn.

Lubchenco has punished U.S. fishermen for two decades of compliance with reduced quotas by rewarding a pirate fleet of longliners in Merida, Mexico.

I wonder what concessions the U.S. got for this gift to Mexico?

They got Mexico and Canada - who explicitly gets this tonnage from Mexico when they do not catch it- to agree to the overall cuts in the western quota. In other words, only US fishermen lost when the western fishery was cut this year at ICCAT. (Although in reality it was a lot worse than that, since we should have got anywhere from 200 to 400 mt in increases based on the science, so it was a lot more than a 50 mt loss...)

    from Page 2:

"The average size of bluefin tuna landed in the Gulf of Mexico longline fishery is 485 pounds"

    and

"Gulf waters are the Atlantic bluefin’s spawning grounds, which is why they are subject to protection here.
Other nations, including Mexico, do not provide the same protections for bluefin"

That's 250+ prime breeders that Mexico is allowed to take in a directed longline fishery, thanks to that Pew-faced scumbag Jane L ... and we all know there's no corruption whatsoever down there so I can't imagine they'd go over-quota ... and Gracias, Mexico, for all your scientific contributions over the years to understanding the habits and distributions of pelagic fish ...

Twofin, thanks for pointing out a prime example of NOAA throwing US fishermen under the bus for their political agenda, and all at the expense of the fish they're supposed to protect from over-exploitation ...

and Heli, I've been to Merida (not since it was completely overrun by Sinaloa drug money), and the thought of those Bandidos and lawless pirate boats getting an undeserved share of a fishery we've all worked hard to rebuild and protect makes me feel like I drank a gallon of their agua ...
