    Cool NMFS Tuna Rules 2010

I attended the NMFS public hearing last night in Gloucester. Small number of fishermen in attendance. I counted only 14! yikes! Although the proposed rule changes were ok, The lack of people attending makes me wonder where this fishery is going in the face of a CITES rule. Where were all the young guns who post here and I see chasing small fish all over. Hope all you guys start paying attention.....Tommy

Thats 100% reason commercial interests are ALWAYS the choice of policy makers. Rec fishermen can never get their constituents to band together and form a powerful group. It is the same for other species as well as freshwater. The rec groups just have not been able to band together with any reel strenghth! There are plenty of anglers out there, the potential is out there. Usually some passage of a rule change may incite some participation, but by then its too late. Like the protected marine sanctuary areas in Cali where noone can fish!! That will spread!!
I sent acheck to the tuna group that was hawking on here to help fund their agenda. I have never heard a word from them, never an acknowledgemnt of receiving $$, list of proposed actions, description of their groups goals. Not reel comforting that this group has what it takes to make an impact on any tuna decisions?

    This is a problem

CITES is a big issue and should not be ignored but an even bigger issue is PEW and what they have done in the California waters. They have closed down most of the productive fishing areas to all fishing and are working there way around the USA coast. You all saw the thread on canyon closures. There is a good thread on noreast.com discussion forum in regards to this.

read thread Pew Who? No Clue?

Even if we win the CITES battle there is still a danger to all fisherman com and rec. Where will we fish for charlie if Stellwagen is closed. There will be so many boats at peaked hill you will be able to jump from boat to boat...

In the wholesale seafood business PEW has been the driving force in funding anti farmed salmon studies.

Thanks for the report Tommy, i couldn't make it down yesterday. That 14 number you were talking about is the norm !! i could probably name most of them. For so many years that is all we could expect, 10 to 15 fishermen. most comm. one or two rec. Sometimes the NMFS folks would outnumber the fishermen. Sad state to be sure, one that MNFS has become accustom to seeing.

Hell we all know to well about that Rec. VS Comm. thing. That's just great fuel for the conservationists, that would include NMFS. For the most part people are only concerned with their own little piece of the pie. The multi species holder dosn't worry about the Tuna Fisherman and the long liners don't worry about the mid Water boats. just the way it is.

The hard part to swallow is it seems the Rec. guys just hope someone else will do their bidding for them. In many cases that would be the very people they Bash !! , the Comm. Some day i hope we ALL get it right.

First of all...I beg to differ...this was not a CITES issue meeting, this was a meeting to sure up some rules that were discussed at length at a meeting in June...14 proplr showing up is not a big deal because NMFS has no control, at least at sarah and Brads level, over a possible CITES listing...secondly the real fishermen that usually show up were probably fishing, the old meetings weren't held at 3pm in Gloucester, they were at nite 7 to 9 or 6 to 8 at the library or in the high school...so lets not cast stones because one guy showed up to a dog and poney show meeting, no offense to anyone but right now we need to focus our attention on our politicians and not worry whether we can catch 3 or 5 a day, we need to focus upon the cold hard fact that with our new administartion and Jane Lubcenko as the acting head of NMFS bad things can and will happen.....Doug

Bad things not only can and will happen under this administration with Jane Lubchenco as the lead of NOAA. Bad things are happenning. Her ties to PEW are no secret.

If we as fisherman do not unite together and participate in local meetings, write letters, sign petitions, and inform the uninformed we will loose this sport and living we all love so greatly.

You can sign yourself up for the nmfs email distribution list - that way you'll know about all the meetings yourself.

Why they don't just notify all permit holders is a mystery to me....
