Fishing Column: New Yorkers dominate Greatest Bluefish contest
Martin Armstrong, Correspondent
The 2010 WICC Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth is now history and one very happy New Yorker is $25,000 richer.
Eric Huner of East Setauket took the top prize with a 15.94-pound bluefish that he caught while fishing off Old Field Point in the winner's hometown.
Huner topped more than 4,000 other anglers fishing on both sides of the Sound.
Huner said in a telephone interview with WICC after he learned he was the unofficial winner that he caught about 30 bluefish during the two-day contest. Most of the fish, with the exception of the winner of course, weighed between 10 and 13-pounds.
What is Huner going to do with his winnings? He told a WICC listening audience that his wife and kids will be sharing in the winnings.
As to the future, Huner stated that not only will he be competing in the 2011 Greatest Bluefish Tournament on Earth -- he will win it!
The winning fish was weighed in at Caraftis Fishing Station, Port Jefferson. NY.
Anastasias Maxpropolos came in second with a 15.86-pound chopper. That fish was weighed in at Jack's Bait and Tackle located on City Island in the Bronx. Maxpropolos won $10,000.
Finishing in third place was Joseph Malero. He caught a 15.80-pound bluefish to win $3,000. That fish was weighed in at East Coast Fishing Supplies in Little Neck, NY.
Susan Scovill took fourth place with a 15.79-pound blue. She weighed the fish at River End Bait and Tackle in Old Saybrook.
Snagging fifth place with a 14.82-pound bluefish was Bruce Antonio. He weighed his fish in at Stratford Bait and Tackle. Scovill and Antonio each won $1,000.
The 6th through 20th place winners each won $200. These lucky anglers are: 6 -- John Russo, 14.60-pounds, weighed in at Capt. Morgan's; 7 -- Rosario Costa, 14.42, Harbor B & T; 8 -- Paul Cascio, 14.42, Stratford B & T; 9 -- Michael Erris, 14.41, Rivers End; 10 -- Richard Dennis, 14.35, Rivers End; 11 -- Alex Altermatt, 14.24; Master B & T and 12 -- Brian Lauria, 14.18, Terminal Tackle.

Several years ago tournament directors created a `Port Prize'. The Port Prize of $200 is awarded to the angler who weighed in the heaviest non-winning bluefish at each official Weigh Station.
Local winners are Benitez Arnaldo, 11.96, Fish Tales B & T; Dan St. George, 13.43, Fisherman's World; Matt Press, 12.61, Rudy's Tackle Barn and Jacob Cohen, 13.22, Sportsman's Den.
Tournament results are unofficial until the top winners pass a Lie Detector test and the winning fish are examined.
