    New tuna reg help needed

Can someone give me a quick rundown on the new recreational regulations for tuna. We have a recreational permit, and I have heard a lot about these new regs but I am not sure what they regulations are.

Can rec permits fish for tuna? Is it only catch and release? Is there any size range that can be retained?

    Thank you.

Is it just me or is the reg a little confusing? I have a hard time reconciling the statement - does fishing for mean with intent to harvest?

"Fishing for, retaining, possessing, or landing large medium and giant BFT (measuring 73 inches curved fork length or greater) north of 39°18' N. lat. (off Great Egg Inlet, NJ,) is prohibited . . . Anglers may catch and release or tag and release BFT of all sizes, subject to the requirements of HMS catch-and-release and tag-and-release programs."

not sure what you mean... if you have any tuna permit you can fish for them. All the permit really does is tells you what you can kill.

Cape if you can make sense of this you would be the best expert NMFS could have.

I think for enforcement purpose and transport purpose they have to cover it all in one sentence

Fishing For: may mean using bait or practice meant for Giant Tuna. I.E 130's or 10 pound bluefish for a live bait. Enforcement is based on poachers catching, passing off fish or selling in Black Market.

As far as angling and catching a giant while fishing for 1 fish between over 27 and under 59 inches you must release all fish 73" and over. And you must release fish 27" and under. confusing isn't it?

If you are participating in a tag program you may purposefully fish for giants and tag and release them.

Just an uneducated guess at what they mean???

Lawyers and goverements get paid by the word.

You can fish for any size tuna. But with a rec permit, you can only kill and keep one under 59 inches (curved fork length) per trip.

Now getting into what "per trip" means to a guy who goes in for lunch and comes back out is enough to make your eye cross.
