Rhinike-
Welcome to the NE forum, and to SFC as a whole! There are a number of us who are trying to open up the lines of communication between us grouchy New Englanders.....can't wait for you to join in the conversation! It should go without saying, but post on up whenever it strikes you- there is no judgement here, only a joy for the sport. Look forward to hearing from you.

TowneyJ reporting in to the Role Call

I Mainely fish in this area (get it?). Unlike what some southern New Englanders may think, Maine is not a province of Canada. Ay?

From April 1 until I hear that Stripers have arrived, I fish local lakes for salmon, trout, and togue (lake trout). I have a 16 ft Starcraft aluminum boat on a new trailer with 75 HP and 6 HP motors that is well equipped to fish in cold or hot weather (top, vinyl sides). I probably fish 40 times or so each year, including all trips for freshwater and saltwater.

Once the stripers show, I fish the Saco River then as the water warms up, I move out towards the beaches between Camp Ellis and Old Orchard Beach. It is neat to catch stripers about 200 feet off shore that has thousands on the beach. One of my fishing buddies often has my binoculars in use (and he's not looking for gulls) and I sometimes have to point out to him when he has a fish on. The use of the binoculars seem to make him oblivious to the screech of the reel drag. I have been very successful with slot sized fish (probably have caught in the thousands over the last 5 years) in this area. I probably can count on one hand the number of fish I keep each year. I plan on targeting larger fish this summer, although I will probably miss the regularity of action I get with the slot fish.

As a teacher, I have the summers off to pursue fishing more regularly. I generally fish during the week to avoid the hassles of the crowds (both natives and tourists). I am close to retirement and when the time comes I plan on using some of this time to extend my spring and fall fishing opportunities.

My typical fishing trip lasts about 6 hours. It involves fishing for about 5 hours. I troll with my 75 horse evinrude (since it is quieter than the older 6 HP) and on average uses about 1.5 gallons. This includes about 4 miles of driving at 2/3 throttle. The price of gasoline for the evinrude
does not impact my frequency of fishing. It is less significant than the cost of gas for the truck, the cost of sandwiches and refreshments, and the cost of worms. My usual fishing buddy usually gets me a sandwich and buys the bait. He drinks his beer and sometimes some of mine. This arrangement seems to be a fair deal for both of us. We have fished often enough that together we can get the boat ramp ready in about a minute!

I am hoping to extend my range of fishing spots in the future. I wish to take some fishing spots to the more remote sections of Maine during the spring and early summer as well the coastal areas of Massachusetts and maybe Connecticut (even though this may take me into the less concentrated regions of Red Sox Nation and into areas having higher proportions of Yankees fans than what I am used to). I am confident it work out ok so long as we are fishing.

Thanks for the opportunity of my sharing my situation in this forum. Tight lines everyone (at least in few months).

Towney-
Awesome intro man! You're lucky to be able to get out during the week- especially when I heard you mention the OOB- talk about a tourist trap. No thank you. That's cool that you've been going to some offshore spots to catch the stripers- when you can find those spots it's great to sit back, chunk it up, catch a ton of fish, and there isn't another boat in sight. Look forward to hearing all about the stories come summer. If you make it down to the Isle of Shoals this summer let me know- we may be out there ourselves.

Hello...My name is Mark. I fish on Cape Cod Bay, and my home port is Northside Marina in Dennis. I started a sportfishing buisness called Shannon Sea Sportfishing, and fish for stripers, blues and football tuna's. I have been fishing for as long as I can remember and started the buisness 4 years ago. I stumbled onto this site a few weeks ago, and its a nice change from some of the others...If anyone is out fishing on the bay...please give me call on ch. 68...I will be happy to tell ya how I am doing and where I am...I have no problem sharing this info....as I like to say..only a few more months till the wrap comes off the boat....stay safe during the holiday season.....

Mark-
I can already tell you are going to be a huge addition to the New England forum. We all share info readily with each other and help each other out whenever possible. Looking forward to hearing about your adventures. Do you have a website or any pics?

Again, welcome!

The website to my buisness is www.shannonsea.com. If anyone is heading out for a day of fishing on Cape Cod Bay, please give me a call on my cell phone , which you can get off the website. If you are coming to the Cape for vacation, please give me a call, and I will try and answer any question you may have...or at least try and point you in the right direction you want to go.....like I said...I have no problem helping anyone out when it comes to fishing...stay safe...
