Never got to see what was on the end of these two hookups; what do you think?

1.First hookup: fishing on a 130 live pollack, down rod no balloon 68 deg water 10 miles se of Isle of Shoals. 130 goes off 5 secs later a 10' fish not jumps but rockets 10' in the air off the stern. Fish bends the rod pratically in half- We fight it for 30 minutes only to lose it at the leader. I got a pretty good view of the jump but it happened so fast-dark on top with white underneath not a lot of color-I'm thinking Mako, what else could jump like that in the area?

    2. 50 class rod with a pollack under a balloon, balloon shakes a little, bobs, shakes then starts firing away from us. We crank down hard on the rod but the mystery fish is swimming at us we finally feel him and puts a good bend on the 50 right we get to the 12 oz weight on the rubber band. We hesitate on cranking for a sec and the fish spits the hook. No sign of chaffing or wear on leader?

    1. Mako (what else gets airborn like that?)

    2. Guessing a small Tuna or a Blue dog that some how never really got the hook set right.

Its been my experience that both blue dogs and porbeagles will occasionally "mouth" the baits before actually biting down. In that case, the leader would show no damage at all in a short period of time like that. I had a 7-8 foot porbeagle take a haddock on a penn 50, and after a 30 second blistering run, it spit the bait. When I pulled it up, there wasn't a single puncture mark on the bait. Wouldn't have thought that a beagle could be capable of being that gentle if I didn't literally watch it take the bait.

I'm saying #1... Mako, and #2...porbeagle or bluedog

There have been quite a few porbeagle in the area as well as a thresher that was taken the same day-who knows. When that balloon was shaking and you could tell the fish was playing with the bait I free spooled and then he was off with it hard away from us. Thats why I thought it might not be a blue dog. Then when I started cranking I couldnt even feel him until I had almost all the line back.
