Custom is a really nice touch - be it by color, species, or even boat name on the rod itself (not to mention quality). Definitely adds that personal touch, and makes it totally unique. Have Paul build something up for you, and your dad will be thrilled!
ps - Jim, I just ordered a couple of those sandflea jigs from your site - they look similar to an old Yo-Zuri a buddy of mine has that does well catching everything from black seabass to bft.

I have a Penn 975LD ( the LD is for Lever Drag) it is my favorite all around reel and always comes with me on the boat. Its perfect for live lining mackerel for bass. I vertical jig sand eel imitations, i troll, and will cast larger plugs with it. The lever drag makes if fool proof. Its just a sweet reel.
The reel is around $275
Mine is matched up with a G loomis (6'6" 12-20 lb) pelagic series rod stand up rod. The rod is high end at $300, but there are tons of rod options.
thanks for all the replies. this is why i came here (to get educated).
i tricked him into telling me he trolls with lures so with this info what do you guys suggest?

Hey Big. Not to get to far off topic here BUT.
Your dad fishes, It would seem You dont.
Wanna give him a great christmas present ?
Buy him a trip of a lifetime and GO WITH HIM.
Forget the rod and how much it costs.
Money is cheap, Time is priceless.![]()
Big,
Now we are getting somewhere...
I wouldn't call them "the best." They are more along the lines of the every day standard. Look into the Cape Cod Rod Companies rods at Red Top in Buzzard's Bay. (about $120 if I remember) They are what I use to troll lures, jigs and tubes on wireline... but they work fine even if you are not using wire line.
For some more money ($200 to $400), Paul708 of JPR Rods can build you a very nice custom stick where you pick the colors, decals and put Dad's name (or the boats name) on it.... Not to mention better quality components...
Star Handcrafted Series is a nice mid point between the Cape Cod Rods and Paul's custom beauties. Look at a rod rated for 20 - 50 pound test with a "Slow" or parabolic action... (IMO, slow action is better for jigging bucktails but everyone has a different idea on that...)
Hope that helps.
Mike
Thanks for the Kudos guys.
findng out what he is trolling would help with rod choice.
for umbrellas, streches, tubes, ect. there are a few choices.
something with a slick butt. would be a good choice.
but some guys down here trool the bunkerspoons..that is usually a special rod. but they work great.
let me know if i can be of help.
Paul,
Bunker spoons are not super popular up here. They work, but they are not the "norm." Given the location "Onset" in Buzzards Bay, I would assume he is talking about Streches, Rapalla's, Umbrella Rigs, Tubes.... etc. But if Big wants to do more snooping it could further narrow the focus.
Another popular method is snapping bucktail jigs. For any of these applications you don't want the big soft Bunker spoon rods. A shorter (5 to 6 foot) and stiffer rod is more popular.
