Got the boat wet yesterday and will be ready to hit some of the Montauk Fluke next Sat/Sun. Can not wait, the winter has been to Long. Nice to see a Northeast section on the site, Keep up the good work.

I may be out there too- a buddy and I will be running his new Albemarle 31 back here (Portsmouth NH) from Freeport NY. How are the waters down there? Are they tricky or are they pretty straight forward?
Straight going on the South Shore of Long Island. Stop by the Point at Montauk, the Fleet will be working the grounds by the Radar beacon in about 50 ft of water this time of year. Easy area to fish and bring home some dinner. Good Luck with the new ride. If you planning to fish drop me a pm and I will give you the latest info/set up.

It's straight forward as can be and take Madchark's advice and bring a rod or two. You need to drop into Montauck for the bite man....it's just wrong to run over fish..If it means arriving late at B Bay I'll come out and guide you in![]()
Catchemup!!!
What sort of gear and tackle should I bring? I've never fished Montauk before...
Reels loaded with 20-30 pound test braid and rods able to handle up to 8-10 ounces of lead. Navigating the are is straight forward. Oh, BTW its spelled Montauk!![]()

You can buck tail but bait fishing is more productive out there. Fluke rigs with a strip of squid or a strip of fluke belly and a small fish, spearing, killey, sand eel, sardine, almost anything small and silver.
My fault on the spelling, yes it is spelled Montauk, I was in A hurry and my A.D.D. kicked in. As described above pick up some pre made fluke rigs, White or pink Spin and glos have been working well in the past years. When at the point you will see the fleet working just off the south shore by the radar done. Set in with 8-10 oz. of lead on the bottom with your rig baited with a whole squid or laced with a large spearing. work the rig off the bottom in a jigging action. When you get a strike bring the rod tip up to set in for the fight. Aveage water depth will be 50 to 55 feet. Montauk regs are currently four fish per person at 19.5 inches. This is the basic method to get you going, Good Luck.
Made the run Sunday am and rounded Montauk Point at 9:20. Water temp. 49f. light wind from the North East. set up with the fleet just off the radar tower. Worked two drifts on the tail of a out going tide. Was able to pull up a couple throw backs. As we made our way towards the town beach the action got a bit better with scoring three keepers in one drift, all in the twenty plus inch range. Slack tide soon hit and we waited it out with pulling in a bunch of shorts. With the swing of the tide the action started up again with a bunch of shorts and some keepers for the box. I ended the day with my limit of four fluke all over twenty plus inches. Headed back in at 2pm to clean up and do the mothers day gig. Its always great to tell the wife how hard it was to get her mothers day fish.
