Monomoy to Race Point, Saturday 17th
After a week with the family on Nantucket, we chose a blue-bird day and steamed back to Plymouth along the eastern shore of the Cape. Spectacular weather and smooth seas made surface visibility nearly perfect. 4.5 miles East of Nauset we spotted a lone, young humpback breaching repeatedly. The whale seemed to enjoy our presence and continued with it's jumping for nearly 30 minutes which thrilled my three kids and wife. Shortly after leaving the whale, we began to spot small pods of jumping tuna seemingly everywhere. These were 60-80 pound tuna, perfect under the weight of the newest regs. With my 12 year-old son driving the 35' Cabo, we did our best to run and gun but it was definitely like whack the mole...we'd get to 50 yards and the fish would disappear, only to see them pop up 1/2 mile away 5 minutes later. They weren't in the surface feeding craze that you can sometimes sneak up upon, but several fish slashing the surface and then gone. After 30 minutes of futility we threw some bars and sluggos in the water and trolled for another 45 min before making way back to Plymouth. The good news is we saw these same class of fish from Nauset all the way North to Race Point.
