My buddy Steve came back for more punishment yesterday, so we ran east of Stellwagen for a mixed groundfish and shark trip. What a beautiful day. Almost too calm for a good drift.
We ended up just east of the bank in a little better than 200' of water. I really had to look around to find water that just touched 66 degrees. After this east blow, I'm wondering how low the temps will go...
The groundfish were very cooperative with a lot of haddock and cod to 20 pounds. I was ready to lift this one in the boat when a 10' blue shark grabbed it. I got lucky and pulled it out of the shark's mouth -- you can see the mark it left though.
After reeling in a bunch of 10 - 12 foot blue dogs, we were hoping to see the blues scatter for a mako, but that just wasn't in the cards. It was too late to move, so we finished the day with cod and haddock heads haywired to the wire leader. Look Ma, no hooks! It was fun to mess around with these sharks -- as many and as large as I've ever seen blue sharks up here.
My mistake, these were ALL Salisbury Threshers!
