Well, as you could probably guess, it is beautiful down here. 80 during the day, 65 at night. Great weather, hot chicks, great drinks, and great fishing!
Today we had a break from the fishing fun and madness, but we are back at it tomorrow and Friday;
Day 1 - Coming into the trip we got nothing but "slow" marlin reports. Tons of small yellowfin, some wahoo, and a few dorado around... We got in touch with Ramon when we got settled and here cheered our spirits by telling us he got three a couple of days ago, but the bite was indeed slow and all the action seemed to be in the afternoon.
Our first day offshore was Monday...and it did not fall into the category of slow... We had to make about a 35mile run North to where the fish had been. When we got there, there were a few frigates, we marked some bait. All looked good. We put out the spread to cover some ground. Two Squid Bar teasers and three ***** ballyhoo. Ramon worked the water and Jaime was rigging more ballyhoo in case we got into some fish. After about an hr some frigates start diving and there were some feeders (marlin balling up bait) a couple hundred yards away...we are clearing the spread at 24 knots; black smoke, birds and boats everywhere. Taylor, Jaime, and I ran up to the bow with a few ballyhoo on pitch rods. As soon as we got close there were stripers tearing through bait on the surface. Jamie and I pitch, and instantly double up. One fish came right at the boat, leader in the rod, pulled the hook, release. The other we released quickly as well. Sick.
Then it was off to the next school of fish. Same deal; as soon as we idle down we pitched the baits, on again. This time Old Greg was on the rod. This fish sounded a bit, but came up for a great show at the end. No. 3 released.
The next 2 hrs were sloooooow. We hit the feeders in the morning right on the tide. But right around the second tide they came up again. We were trolling to cover water during the lull. We trolled right up to what looked like was going to be a feed (frigates circling high)....ZZZZzzzzzz long rigger gets bit but not hooked. ZZZZzzz right rigger gets a bite, same thing. I re-rigged another hoo for the long rigger and pitched it back again. Fish was all over it instantly. Tight! and No. 4 released.
After that fish, the feeders were up again. We got on another bait ball and doubled up for a second time. No.5 and 6 released! The fish were all in the 90-150lb range, and are a blast on the 7' Calstar/Trinidad combos we were using.
Day 1 success, and we lead the fleet with 6 marlin releases.
Day 2 - The second day (Tuesday) we had the "ladies" with us; Jackie and Emily. We were going into the morning only hoping the day would be as good as the first. Ramon ran us back to the same spot....dead....barely any birds or any life. A few whales and porpoise did show their heads for a little while though, which broke up the day for the girls. We did see a couple marlin free jump, but they weren't feeding.
At around noon we started trolling back South. At around 2 we reached the lighthouse (where we got our fish last year) and a HUGE feed was just beginning. Tons of big boats flying around, 3X as many birds as the day before and a lot of fish. We made our move on a few schools of fish, but the boat traffic was putting them down quick. After about 30 min we finally got on our own feed. First pitch, bang hooked up. Jackie was in the chair for her first marlin. She fought it for about 10 minutes, but got jumped off.
After that we got onto another feed and doubled up. Jackie on one fish and Emily on the other. Jackie, unfortunately had the main line break on hers...bummer, but thats fishing. Emily on the other hand was getting smoked! We were backing down HARD on her fish. At this point we were in 3-4s and getting soaked. Such a blast. Emily had to pass off to Taylor a few times, but she did great. After about 45 minutes we finally got the fish up and Taylor got it on the wire. We got it on board for a quick pic; absolutely HUGE striper. Ramon said pushing 180lbs!
Back at it again tomorrow. Hopefully it's another nice day!
We will try to post another report before we leave, but if we don't get a chance; happy holidays to all of you guys!
-Bryan, Taylor, and Greg
Here are a few pics from the girl's new cameras and some of the video we got. The video is AMAZING.
