Well, I wish we could end the report with an epic tale but, the fishing slowed waaayyyyy down. We end today with 7 marlin released, biggest 180lbs, and 18 fish hooked. Great action considering the slow bite and abundance of cold water. Here's how it ended up:
Day 3 - VERY slow morning and early afternoon. There were maybe 2-3 boats that pitched at some tailing marlin that were fortunate enough to get a release. We shoved off the dock at 9am (we had a breakfast date with the ladies before they headed home early for Christmas) and didn't see any action until Ramon pulled a "secret spot" out of his bag of tricks.... At around 3:30 we pulled the spread in and Ramon ran over to his buddy to grab some more live bait. We ran about 5 miles to the North, all by ourselves and one bird working. Jamie bridled up some live macks and cabillito and we slow trolled. It wasn't 20 minutes later that a bait ball came up 20 ft from our port bow right under the 1 bird that we stopped on. I grabbed the center bait and reeled it tight, closer to the ball, and watched an angry marlin come out from under the bait to smoke mine. Jamie hooked one too and we were doubled up.....only to pull the hook on mine after 10 minutes and pull the hook on the other after getting the leader 2 ft from the rod tip.... The best part about the day was watching our mother, in the chair, with a jumping marlin backing down at 6 knots. Pretty cool, and great vid.
Day 4 - Today was almost identical to Thursday. We did have some more action on tailers though. We pitched at 4 and managed one hookup, only to pull another hook. On one of the tailers, Jamie pitched and the fish wanted nothing of the bait. Taylor heard one of the flat line ballyhoo rods in the spread start to scream. A fish came up in the spread while we were working the tailer. Fish on!.....but, another pulled hook....
Overall, great trip! Ramon is again, an unreal fishermen, and one of the best boat handlers I have ever seen. Jamie, is top notch. One of the quickest people in the cockpit I have met and a bait rigging pro. Taylor and I will be bringing home some "tricks" that we learned from the guys. As always, we highly recommend the Dream Weaver boys!
Merry Christmas!
- Greg, Taylor, and Bryan
