I find a 4 foot black squid bar to be a near perfect imitation
RonZ makes a killer sandeel immitation (capecod sandeel)
Maria lures are great for all kinds of fishing, Striped Bass, Blue Fish, " light tackle" Mahi Mahi, Bonito, Skip Jack, False Albacore, Yellowfin, Bluefin, that is everything that I have caught using a Maria. They come in a bunch of different colors and sizes.
When using them for larger fish I replace the treble hook with a Xstrong J hook.
Sandeels may be the hatch, but they still eat squidbars.
Gulp Alive makes a good one; as well as Bill Hurley - and hes local. I have put em on as high as 6oz jigs with good success.
My friend put a big sand lance from a tuna belly on his spinning rod and was tight before it hit the water. he lost this fish and spent the hole day trying to catch another this way. Not a sniff he said he was bouncing it off the tunas heads and no takers. Meanwhile I trolled 4 fish with a Trick or Treat squid bar. ( orange and black) Hmmm I have never seen an orange and black fish or sand eel? (Bouncing off the water at 5kts). Like a cat and a laser beam they just can't resist it.
Why do Marlin eat a fussy bubble jet Orange Red and Green and chase it for a 1/4 mile? I have seen allot of these swimming in schools?
We are still searching for the Tuna version of Crack?
Also how many Rainbow colored baitfish have you seen in these parts? I always have wondered what the hell to tunas think a rainbow colored squid bar look like??? Could it be the proximity to P-town???
But yet again why try to out think something that has a brain the size of a golf ball. If it ain't broken don't fix it!
You guys ever run cedar plugs up there??
They'll eat anything that swims. All of the above! Go light on your flouro too. There are a million ways to catch bluefin tuna. The Sniper lure is a great piece of tackle...very effective by itself or behind a bar. The trick or treat(black/orange) bar seems to be outfishing all the bars out there...hmmm...mimicking the mutated toothed eel perhaps...They breed over near the power plant in Plymouth.
Guys were doing well I heard on live mackeral today at Peaked Hill. We caught a 66 inch fish on a pink skirted ballyhoo on sat but Im finding the fish were very leader shy. We dropped down to 100. Had a couple more fish eat the wwb baits...only one up on a bar. Need to get a black and orange in the arsenal...
Has anyone been catching macks? I'd love to take a few down to Chatham. Hoping to get back out on thurs
