Just my opinion but why have a quota for small fish if they're not going to stick to the quota and close it when reached. These small fish haven't spawned yet and are the lifeblood of our fishery.
The small fish quota is fish under 47" all of the fish we have caught have been in the small Medium category.

We have a large reserve of uncaught quota, this is how they have been keeping the season open. By using the reserve we can keep the season open. Also NMFS can pull unused quota from any other category to use in another category.

When the quota of 27" to 47" is met that portion of the quota will be closed. fish 47" to 73" come out of the General quota and will remain open.

There is allot of controversy regarding which fish is the Life Blood the Mommy's or the Baby's? The quota is made to keep a good balance.

PM me if you have any questions regarding this issue.

Why do fish 47-73" come from the general quota? They're Rec fish.

Not trying to be argumentative here just feel like we need to let some more of these small fish run the gauntlet and be able to become spawners. The mommy's aren't going to be there forever (they will either be caught or die of old age. And the older a tuna gets the egg quality gets worse and worse) and need to be replaced at some point.

Just because a tuna can pull some drag on a 30, 50 or 80 doesn't mean that fish has spawned yet.

There's a fine line between trying to keep our quota from being given to Canada and killing too many small fish that haven't had a chance to spawn.

I've said my piece. Great job on the fish today and good luck with the rest of the season.

great story.

isn't it always the case - its the asswhippings on the way out that invariably pay back like that once you get to the grounds. My best days have always been in 20 knots of wind.

I always wonder what it would be like to fish the canyons in 20-25 as opposed to hang on and pray for dawn
