Harpooning medium tuna
First of all I would appreciate it it people would create their own thread regarding their concerns or negative comments regarding how to fish. This is a tuna fishing report thread regarding Mass Bay not a public issue thread if you do not like how we fish do not read our thread.
Regarding harpoons and medium size fish over 150 pounds. It is safer to cockpit harpoon a fish this size if you are going to keep it. And it helps keep you from losing fish at the boat. Regarding tag and release or just releasing fish we use a small lip gaff attached to a tag line and we swim the fish in gear while we place the tag and estimate weight and length. lately I have been telling the charter to quit after they catch their first tuna and go catch cod and shark to avoid damaging any small fish. There is no need to keep fishing after you have your meat and it is dangerous to leader these 200 pound fish. If you are Trophy fishing than release the small ones. (at least until the end of the day) As far as video the harpoon shots are popular. But we will start taping more tag and release. If you watch our videos we have allot of release shots. If you care to comment on these issues please start a new thread regarding your comments. By the way, we have caught Tuna almost every day this week. The shark fishing has been good with multiple hookups every day. We combine ground fishing with shark fishing and we are filling the box with Cod and Haddock. A bite and breakfast.
8/30 - The MBG report has been slacking with updates lately. Taylor has been basking in the glory of Mako fame, big Greg is so delirious from fishing everyday that you can't even speak to him around the house. And myself, well, I have been busy "saving the world" at my real job and havn't had much time to fish the past few weeks do to the glorious weather...
I did have the chance to mate for my father this past sunday: 3:30 am - Cleaned the boat from all of the "shark chaos" that went on Thurs and Fri 4:30am - Loaded up the jelly beans (pogaloids) for the trip/ tried to have a civil conversation with my father, which quickly ended after I realized he hadn't drank his 13th cup of coffee yet. 4:45am - Charter not there yet... 5:00am - Charter still not there 5:30am - Charter still not there... 6:15am - 7 voicemails, 2 emails, and one pissed off mother back home later, we left with Ken, our Marine owner, to get him his first Chuckie. 7:30am - Arrive at destination 8:00am - Hooked up 8:30am - Fish on the deck 8:30am-9:00am - Watched 100s of fish push, jump, smash, bounce, fly, and NOT eat everywhere. 9:15am - Called it 10am ish - Breakfast at the Mill Wharf. Not the most action packed day, but short and sweet. -Bry |

Sept. 2nd 2009
Not True I am usually good after 6 cups.
Sorry for not posting lately but mid season charters are booming and I have had barely enough time to read some of my favorite SFC posts. I will be writing some post dated stories soon I have some good ones. Just an update we have been catching tuna in the 60" to 70" range almost every day. The bite some days has been slow but if you are patient you will go home with some nice Steaks. I am sure you all know but the Shark fishing has been awesome we are catching many sharks. lots of Fun and antics from the charters. I have Sunday off and will be writing some reports. |

FYI
F.Y.I. Report
I was talking to one of the buyers today he was concerned about the amount of Market Tuna being caught, the bite is slow in Mass bay for giants right now. One of the spotter planes who works for the Tag a Tiny program told me he has seen allot of medium fish but not to many giants. We have seen a couple of schools of 300 to 400 pound fish but no Big Boys. On another note we are seeing allot of small fish close to shore around 4 miles out these fish are in the 75 pound to 100 pound range. We have also seen many fish in the medium class 100 to 200 pound. From what I have been told when there are allot of small fish the big ones do not want to compete so they go elsewhere. The else where is off PEI and Newfoundland they are loaded with giants. most of the Canadians are holding on to their quota waiting for the fish to get fat. Bryan is going up to fish in PEI next week and he will give you a report on his adventure. |
